expect students to gain? Are there connections to other curriculum areas and subject area benchmarks? )
Standard 1: Concept of Print Awareness- The student will develop and demonstrate
Content Standards
knowledge of print awareness.
NETS*S Standards:

Communication and Collaboration

Overview (a short summary of the lesson or unit including assignment or expected or possible products)
In this lesson, students will learn about CAP and phonemic awareness. They will learn what phonemic
awareness is, and why it is important to reading. Learn and practice different strategies over phonemic
awareness, and learn the importance of connecting phonemic awareness to phonics to improve their reading
skills.

Essential Questions (What essential question or learning are you addressing? What would students care or
want to know about the topic? What are some questions to get students thinking about the topic or generate
interest about the topic? What questions can you ask students to help them focus on important aspects of the
topic? What background or prior knowledge will you expect students to bring to this topic and build on?)
What is Phonemic Awareness? How does this help the children in their reading and writing skills? What comes
next after the learning the basic concept of Phonemic Awareness? How would one put words together to make a
sentence?

Assessment (What will students do or produce to illustrate their learning? What can students do to generate new
knowledge? How will you assess how students are progressing (formative assessment)? How will you assess
what they produce or do? How will you differentiate products?)
1. Students will make a poster board of the alphabet and give an example of something that starts with each
letter.
2. Students will play a fun and creative game naming as many things as they can that start with the letter
they are learning that week.
3. Students will be graded on the knowledge they have gained over phonemic awareness letters and
sounds.
Resources (How does technology support student learning? What digital tools, and resourcesonline student
tools, research sites, student handouts, tools, tutorials, templates, assessment rubrics, etchelp elucidate or
explain the content or allow students to interact with the content? What previous technology skills should students
have to complete this project?)
1. Students will learn basic computer skills appropriate for their age level. For example, how to turn on the
computer, how to use the mouse and how to turn the sound on/off.
2. Students will learn how to navigate through funbrain.com and play games that will help them with their
phonemic awareness and reading readiness skills.
3. Students will have access to videos that will teach them more about CAP in a fun way.
Instructional Plan
Preparation (What student needs, interests, and prior learning provide a foundation for this lesson? How
can you find out if students have this foundation? What difficulties might students have?)
I expect almost all of my students to know the alphabet when coming into first grade, and I expect them to have
some basic knowledge about Phonemic Awareness. I hope to build on their schema, and improve what they
already know. I would like the children to leave my class having the confidence and knowledge to sound out any
word they please. Students who come into my class not knowing the alphabet will have trouble grasping
Phonemic Awareness and CAP, and may require some extra time to catch on to things.
Management (How and where will your students work? Classroom, lab, groups, etc?
My students will work in a classroom. When working in the classroom they will have stations set up inside the
room requiring students to work on different skills. The children will have a writing center, they will have a library
center where they can read and listen to books, there will be a math center, and there will be a restaurant center
where the children can read things like the menu, and write down their orders. At every center the child has an
opportunity to learn and practice on what we have been working on in the classroom but it provides them with a
fun way of doing so.
Instruction and Activities (What instructional strategies will you use with this lesson? How will your
learning environment support these activities? What is your role? What are the students' roles in the
lesson? How can the technology support your teaching? What engaged and worthwhile learning activities
and tasks will your students complete? How will they build knowledge and skills? Will students be
expected to collaborate with each other and others? How will you facilitate the collaboration?)
I will give examples at the start of the students class to show them what they will be learning and working on for
the day. Once I have taught the lesson and provided a few examples the children will have an opportunity to
complete the work on their own. I will not allow them to work together on this assignment because I will provide
several other opportunities for group work. If a child is having issues understanding the lesson they can come to
me and I will provide extra examples and any other help they may need.

Differentiation (How will you differentiate content and process to accommodate various learning styles
and abilities? How will you help students learn independently and with others? How will you provide
extensions and opportunities for enrichment? What assistive technologies will you need to provide?)
1. Students will be able to listen to reading tapes and follow along with the book the recorder is playing they
way then can see and hear what the words should look and sound like.
2. Students will practice writing simple spelling words every week they way they become comfortable with
the words and will recognize them easier
3. If a student needs my help, I will be there to assist them.
Closure and Reflection (Will there be a closing event? Will students be asked to reflect upon their work?
Will students be asked to provide feedback on the assignment itself? What will be your process for
answering the following questions?
Did students find the lesson meaningful and worth completing?
In what ways was this lesson effective?
What went well and why?
What did not go well and why?
How would you teach this lesson differently?)
For the closing event I will have the children read a small short story to the class, and I will have them take one
last spelling test that way I can evaluate what the students learned in my class. I can see if I need to change my
lesson plans, I can see what is working and what may need some improvements, and I can provide a list to the
childrens parents of what they are excelling in, and what they need to work on over the summer.
