Description of Activities and Setting

Good morning students! Who can tell me what we have been talking
about this week? You all know that we have been looking at the book
Charlottes Web and discussing the setting, theme, and plot. Who can
tell me what setting means and the different parts of setting? If you
know about the setting and plot, that helps you to recognize what the
author wants you to understand.
Today you are going look at the setting on Charlottes Web and
compare and contrast it to a book in our classroom library that you have
read in the past.
- Lets think back to when we read Charlottes Web earlier this year.
The story begin on the farm where Wilbur was born and later moves to
another farm. What is the author talking about when they let you know
where the story is taking place? (setting - CFU) In Charlottes Web, the
setting is on a farm in the country. Last week we finished reading James
and the Giant Peach. Who remembers where this story takes place?
Who can compare the two stories setting? (rural and inside a peach)
Most stories have different a unique setting and thats what sets them
apart.
- Think back to Charlottes Web again. We have talked about what
theme is before, so who can tell me one possible theme for this book.
(fear) The young girl who saves his life in the beginning is afraid that
her father will kill little Wilbur. Wilbur also fears for his life because he
thinks that they will use him as food. While there are other themes for
the book, this is a common theme. I want someone to explain to me the
theme of James and the Giant Peach. How does it compare to the story
of Charlottes Web? Can you elaborate on how they are similar? In
Charlottes Web, the plot of the story

4. Guided Practice

I want you to use a Venn Diagram and to help you prepare your
thoughts so that you can write two paragraphs about the book that you
choose and Charlottes Web. I will walk around to everyone but you
will start by yourself and write the setting of both books and compare
them in the Venn Diagram. Does everyone remember how to use Venn
Diagram? Thats correct, you should write some main ideas about both
books in the big circle, then write similar facts in the middle. This will
help you prepare to compare and contrast the stories and the differences
in how they were written.

5. Independent Practice

Students will write two paragraphs comparing and contrasting the

setting, plot, and themes of the story. They will write one paragraph
about the similarities and one paragraph describing the differences in
the two.

6. Assessment Methods
of
all objectives/skills:

7. Closure

8-10
minutes

The assignment is out of 10 points (5 points per paragraph)

- 5 points strong description and lots of detail
- 3 points some description with basic information
- 1 point very little detail and leaves out key details from plot, setting, and theme
It is important to be able to see the differences in books and compare
2-3 mins
the details. When you are reading a new book, you can recognize how
every character is different just like all of you are different. Can
someone give me a quick comparison of the book they chose and
Charlottes Web? What differences did you see in the books?

Targeted Students Modifications/Accommodations
I have two ESL students and I will work with them
separately to help them understand what it means
to compare and contrast. Instead of writing two
paragraphs, they can make two lists in order to
compare and contrast the two stories.

Student/Small Group Modifications/Accommodations

Materials/Technology: A copy of Charlottes Web for all students and one short novel for each student (can be
different), journal and pencil
Reflection on lesson: (N/A)
*Modified slightly for use in ELED 3111, Smith, Fall 2015.
