I CE = I B < I CEmax .Intheactivestatethetransistorlimitsthecurrentthatisoutputtedat

amplifythebasecurrentandlimitthecurrentinputtedatthecollector.

NPNSaturatedState
Asexplainedabove,thereisalimittotheamountofcurrentat I CE
.Asthebasecurrent
( IB
)increases,thevoltageacrossthetransistor( V CE
)decreases.Thevoltagefromthe
collectortotheemitter V CE
decreasesuntilitgetsto0.2
volts
.Atthispoint,the
transistorissaturated V CE
cannotgetssmallerand I CE
hasreacheditsmaximum
value.Thismaximumvaluedependsontheresistanceattheloadandinputvoltage
connectedtothecollector.If I B
continuestoincrease, V CE
remains0.2voltsand I CE
remainsatmaximum.

Inthepicture,weseeacurrentvalueof20m
amps
goingintothebase.So, I CE = I B
=
100*0.02=2amps.However,theinputvoltageis10voltsandtheloadresistanceis10,
resultinginamaximumcurrentof1amp.Thismeansthetransistorislettingthe
maximumamountofcurrentthroughsaturatingthetransistor,andlimiting I CE
toabout
1ampand V CE
to0.2volts.Transistorsinthesaturatedstateareusedtoallowthefull
