Lesson Plan
Name: Kelsey Bahler
Grade/Subject: 3 Science
Unit: Testing Materials
Topic: Methods of Joining straws
Date: December 8
Length
of Lesson: 1 hour
General
3-8 Evaluate the suitability of different materials and designs for their
Learning
use in a building task.
Outcomes
Specific
3-8-1 Recognize that functional structures must be sufficiently strong
Leaning
and stable and that unstable or weak structures are often unsafe to

Introduction

3-8-3 Describe the properties of some common solids such as wood,

paper and plastic that make them suitable for use as building
materials.

3-8-6 Apply procedures to test the strength of different methods of

joining.

Students will
Test and discover different methods of joining straws
Discover that different methods of joining affect the strength and
stability of a design
Utilize scientific method and fair testing techniques
What is stability?
How might different methods of joining affect stability? Strength?
Kits (x7)
- straws (24)
- plasticine
- pipe cleaner
- cardboard
- blocks
- holder?

o What did we test?
o What were we testing? Not strength but
______(stability)
o What is stability?
o What result did we find?
o The taller the container, the wider the
base needs to be in order to be stable.
Containers that were wide and lower to
the ground were more stable than
containers that were higher with smaller
bases.
Finish conclusion from last day or any other

Methods of joining straws (35-40 minutes)

o Hand-out helpers can hand out Methods
of Joining Straws lab
o Read the Question
o Create a hypothesis (individual)
o How is this going to be a fair test?
What is the one thing that
changes?
The type of material used
to join the straws is the one
thing that changes.
o Materials List
o Demonstrate: We will be making cubes
out of straws and connecting them with
two different types of joiners: pipe
cleaners and plasticine.
o If time: demonstrate what failure looks
like for it to be a fair test
o Go over the procedure checklist with the
students.
You will be working in small groups
for this activity.
As a group you will make cubes out
of straws using the two different
types of connectors.
You will be working with your table
groups again but have the
opportunity today and tomorrow to
show me that you can pick your
groups on Thursday. Remember
the company rules. How can we all
be included in this test?
CLEAN-UP (5 minutes)
Play jeapordy song
Show an example of some well-done
observations
What method of joining straws was the most
effective? (5-7 minutes)
o As a class, discuss the conclusion for the
activity. When engineers are designing a
building, they take time deciding which
method of joining is the most effective to
provide a strong and stable structure. The
weather is considered, how much
movement takes place in the structure as
well as the amount of flexibility or
strength that is required for the structure.
