Ministry

Luke

John

1:35-39

Mark

Matthew

JtBs disciples follow Jesus

John 1:35-39
What is happening in this passage in John?
Johns disciples ask about Jesus and they seek to
know more about him.

Mark

4:12-17

1:14-15

Luke

4:14-15

Matthew
John

Jesus begins his ministry

Mt 4:12-17, Mk 1:14-15, Lk 4:14-15
Jesus heard that JtB was in prison so he began
preaching.
I like to think that sometimes certain things in
our lives force us into action. Maybe Jesus
was the same way.

Mark

4:18-22

1:16-20

Luke

1:40-51

Matthew
John

The first disciples

Simon Peter and Andrew follow: They were
fishermen.
James and John, sons of Zebedee: They were
repairing fishing nets. They QUICKLY left their father
to follow Jesus. Their father was left with only hired
help.
Johns story is a little different. Andrew BRINGS his
brother Simon
Simons name changed to Cephas = Peter (meaning
small rock)
Philip CHALLENGES Nathaniel, Come and see.
Nathaniel is a skeptic, needs proof.

Luke

John

2:1-4:42

Matthew

Jesus changes water into wine

Jesus Changes water into wine.
Jesus not happy with Marys request. He is
not ready to start public ministry. But he is
obedient. Obedience doesnt always mean we
like it but it does me we obey with a willing
heart.
Only, Mary, servants and disciples realize what
happened. Jesus is humble because he
doesnt want credit.
Jesus only made the best.
Jesus is God! He has supernatural powers.
The Disciples needed proof.

Jesus clears the temple courts

The original Passover was about identification as
a follower of God. It separated them from the
Egyptians because of the sacrifice of spilled
blood.
These Jews had reduced this sacrifice to money.
Jesus kicked these people out. Nothing about
Jesus should have to do with making money!
They demanded a sign which Jesus said he would
show them but just not yet, but they did not
understand.
But people followed him because of the miracles
he was doing.

Jesus teaches Nicodemus

He was a Pharisee which means he was a teacher of the law.

Maybe he was
Curious
Believer- because of what hed seen
A spy- this is a bad option because Jesus saw into his heart.

He came in the dark because

He wanted to keep it a secret.
His peers hated Jesus
Hes concerned for his own safety.

Jesus tells him he must be born again

This is not literal
Figurative = Spiritual
He compares it to the wind.
Like how God blows our sins away
We see the effects of the wind but not the wind itself. This is like us, we cant see the
actual change but we can see the effects of the change as we behave differently.

John 3:16-21 contrast the dark and the light. I cant help but think that
Jesus is confronting N. about doing all this is secret at night. I feel as though
Jesus is telling him that it will all come out in the end and he just ought to
surrender already.

JtB testifies about Jesus again

John 3:22-36
First off, the order for this might be off. Maybe this part of the story falls before the
changing of the water to wine in Cana.

After a scuffle between two men John is again

telling people that he isnt the one but rather Jesus
is the one.
Then he compares it to a wedding. John views
himself sort of like the best man. And its ok for him
to get things ready but its not ok for him to pretend
to be the groom. It just doesnt work like that!

The Samaritan Woman

John 4:1-26
Its noon, not a time when he would eat. Hes thirsty but has no bucket.
Hes in Samaria and a woman from there comes to draw water and he asks
her for some.
This is crazy since shes an unclean Samaritan
This is crazy since shes such a big sinner

Jesus tells her that he can give her water that will cause her to never thirst
again.
But she cant see past the physical.
How can that be I want that

Jesus immediately jumps to the idea that she has been with 5 men but isnt
married to them. This could mean she is a prostitute.
She jumps to the idea that they worship in different places.
Here again she goes straight to the physical again. You go there, I go here, its
ok though.

Jesus contradicts her with teaching that tells her to stop focusing on the
physical and to stop focusing on the comparison between Jews and
Gentiles.
Jesus is about to change everything up! Hes giving her a clue!!

Luke

Mark

4:16-41

1:21-34, 6:1-4

4: 23-25, 8:14-17
13:54-58

Matthew
John

Jesus is rejected at Nazareth

Mt 13:54-58, Lk 4:14-30, Mk 6:1-4
He read from the prophet Isaiah (61:1-2)
Everyone would stand during the reading. But would then sit down for the application portion.

Jesus was a good speaker

Luke 4:22 says he spoke with grace.

He applied the scripture to himself

But they know him and his family and they cant understand how Jesus could be more than just
a man.

Vs. 57 what he was claiming was too great for them to believe, hed done too
much to just dismiss him, so they had to get angry.
Jesus understands that he cant be accepted by them because they are jealous.
What did he say that would make them want to kill him?
He compared himself to Elijah and Elisha- the two greatest prophets in Jewish history.
He showed how they did miracles not for the Jews which means that God isnt just for the Jews.
He compared them to the hungry, the widows and those with leprosy. This was too much!

They try to kill him, but he walks away.

They pushed him to one of the two cliffs in Nazareth, The eastern edge has a cavern, the western
edge has a cliff. No one is sure which one they tried to throw him over.

Jesus goes to Capernaum

Lk 4:31-32
He taught with authority. Not like the other
teachers of the law.
He demonstrated his authority by casting out the
demon from the man.
If we use Luke as the chronology then Jesus
chooses Capernaum to live because he was
rejected in Nazareth.
But if we choose Marks chronology then the
rejection happens after he had already chosen to
live in Capernaum.

Jesus heals man

of unclean spirit

Mt 4:14- 17, Mk
1:21-28, Lk
4:33-37

He heals Simons mother-in-law

Mt. 4:23-25, Mk 1:29-34, Lk 4:38-41
Jesus is asked to heal her.
Afterwards, many sick and demon possessed
are brought to him.
Word traveled fast!

The Beatitudes Mt. 5:3-10

"Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Poor in spirit: humility, humble before God, we cant do anything to
contribute towards getting into heaven.

Kingdom of heaven: But we do get into heaven, but not because of what
we have done. This shows how utterly dependent on God we are.

* We must repent and humble ourselves before God. These are the people who will
enter heaven.
*It also can mean that we dont get to get into heaven without a continued attitude of
humility. We dont get to just ask God in and then act like a selfish, self-righteous
Pharisee.

The Beatitudes Mt. 5:3-10

"Blessed are they who mourn,
for they shall be comforted.
Those who Mourn: regret over our sin, regret for the suffering of others, it is a blessed
thing because it creates in us a desire to improve and to do what is right. This isnt about
the people who are hurting now, its about Israel and its humiliation, being controlled by
foreign powers. Its not just mourning something but mourning its cause.
Will be Comforted: By the creator in the end. This is a future promise, it
isnt given right now. In the end, when God returns, that is when we can
expect every tear to be dry.

*There is comfort in knowing that there will be justice in the end, that God wont allow
things to stay as they are and that in the end God will right every wrong.

The Beatitudes Mt. 5:3-10

Blessed are the meek,
for they shall inherit the earth.
Meek: gentle and kind even in the face of hardship., self control; free from malice and
condescending spirit. They dont exploit people or oppress them, no vengeance or
vendettas, not violent or trying to seize power.
Inherit the earth: This seems to imply (at the time) that they will actually
inherit the promised land. But more than that it means that they will
achieve a sense of place, a security, an inheritance. But today it implies
the promise of the new covenant, that God would bring a new earth and
it wont be populated by the crazy power hungry leaders, but with Christ
like people.
* How can we become meek when we are not? Perhaps it is important to remember
the gifts of the spirit from Gal. It is something that is produced in the Christian through
the Holy Spirit. We cannot do it through our own strength.

The Beatitudes Mt. 5:3-10

Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for
righteousness,
for they shall be satisfied.
Righteousness(Def):conforming to Gods standard: or
doing the will of God.
Hunger and thirst for righteousness: This describes
more than someone who is doing good things, or
wants to do good things, this is describing someone
whos passions are for righteousness.
They shall be satisfied: certainly when God returns they will be
satisfied. But there is a now factor as well since God does give
us a right standing before him, if we have chosen to follow him.
*How do we become like this? 1st it is through commitment to Jesus Christ. But as the
believer walks closely with the Lord, then he is more aware of the unrighteousness of
the world and he will begin to long for it.

The Beatitudes Mt. 5:3-10

Blessed are the merciful,
for they shall obtain mercy.
Merciful: having a loving attitude towards those who are in distress or who are hurting. This
comes from knowing how inadequate and weak and incomplete you are. It is much easier to
be merciful when you know how much mercy you have received. They are called blessed
because there is a lack of self and a desire to do good to others because of genuine
dependence on God.
Obtain mercy: In the end, on the day of judgment: they
will receive mercy, but it is not because they did so many
good things, rather it is because they understood the value
of things, they understood how much they had been
forgiven.
*Mercy must be shown through genuine
spiritual experience. Its not something that we
do because its the right thing to do. We do it
because we actually care, and we actually
remember how much we have been forgiven.

The Beatitudes Mt. 5:3-10

Blessed are the pure of heart,
for they shall see God.
Heart- the will and the intentions

So the pure of heart are those whose will and intentions are
untouched by sin.

To see God, this was a crazy thing because no one ever got to
see God! Never ever so this is a really great promise!

The Beatitudes Mt. 5:3-10

Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they shall be called children of God.
Peacemaker- Someone who brings about or encourages
peace. But what does it mean to bring peace. In this case
it means more than a lack of fighting but rather it brings
about the reconciliation between those who were
separated from God and bringing them back to him.

This lifestyle is very different from what the world teaches us

and if we live a life that is characterized by peace then we will
be known as his children. People will know that we are
different.

The Beatitudes Mt. 5:3-10

Blessed are they who are persecuted for the
sake of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
This one is kind of like the catch all from the previous 7. Jesus has listed out all of
these things that will identify us as Christians. His kingdom looks like those 7 things.
But if we live like that then we might attract negative attention.

But if we are persecuted then we can know that either here on earth or
eventually in heaven, God will reconcile and right all the wrongs. Those who are
evil will pay the price and we will get to be in heaven with Jesus!
