Puzzle Cube

Carson Burch
Introduction to Engineering

December/3/15

Overview:
The purpose of the puzzle cube project was to create a puzzle from scrape wood
the pieces left over from a company. It was just me working on the puzzle cube project. I
worked on this project for about a month give or take.

Materials List:
The materials I used in the puzzle cube project are Graph Paper, Autodesk Inventor,
Wood cubes (.75 by .75 by .75), Wood glue, and a Pencil.

Procedure:

Procedure:
The first thing we did for this project was learning the problem and what we were going
to be doing. Next, we brainstormed possible cube combinations and drew them on
isometric graph paper.

After that, we picked out what combinations we want for our

puzzle cube. We created two different puzzle cubes at first then we narrowed it down to
one puzzle cube.

For both puzzle cubes we made a multi view drawing and dimensioned the cubes in the
multi-view drawing.

After making the multi view drawing I transferred the multiview sketches to Autodesk
inventor. Once all the parts were transferred to Autodesk inventor I created an
assembled version of the cube. Then once completing the assembled view I created a
model of how it was put together to form the cube.

After the assembled view on Autodesk inventor the next step was to make
drawing of all the parts and assemblies. That was the last step of Autodesk inventor. The
next step was to glue wood block together to make the individual pieces. After that all we
had to do was color the blocks.

Concepts Covered:
Some of the major concepts covered in the puzzle cube project was the design
process, intro to Auto Desk Inventor, and applying sketching to the design process. We
used the design process to design the puzzle cube. When I was designing the puzzle cube
I made graphic models on Auto Desk inventor so I could look at the pieces in a different
view and so I could assemble them together on the computer. The last concept covered
was applying sketches to the design process. We sketched the puzzle cubes on graph
paper first then from those sketches we transferred them onto Auto Desk Inventor.

Summary:
From the puzzle cube project I learned how to use and understand concepts of
engineering. I learned the design process, how to use Autodesk inventor, and expanded
my knowledge of brainstorming. The first thing we did for this project was learning the
problem and what we were going to be doing. Next, we brainstormed possible cube
combinations and drew them on isometric graph paper. Then, we picked out what
combinations we want for our puzzle cube. We created two different puzzle cubes at first
then we narrowed it down to one puzzle cube. For both puzzle cubes we made a multi
view drawing and dimensioned the cubes in the multi-view drawing. One of my first
difficulties with the puzzle cube was on one drawing I didnt put enough cubes in the
puzzle so then it didnt make 27 total cubes. On the other cube I put to many cubes in the
puzzle so it made 28 cubes. After thinking it through and counting my cubes I fixed the
problem easily and kept on working. The next problem I ran into was I wasnt familiar
with the auto desk inventor we were doing in class. After some help from Mr. Griesback (

my teacher) I got over that road bump easily. I could have improved on the quality of my
brainstorming sketches and my multi-view sketches. I could have used better line
techniques that we learned earlier in the year. If I were to do this puzzle cube project
again I would make my puzzle cube more intersect and have more pieces interlock.
