Unit Overview
Overview: Life processes require the exchange of matter between living systems and the
external environment. Students will investigate life processes at the organism and system level,
and extrapolate these processes to the cellular level. In closely studying the digestive and
circulatory systems, students will understand that a healthy diet and lifestyle is crucial to their
wellness.
Rationale for the Unit
Within this unit students will gain an understanding and further promote their knowledge of cells,
the body and its numerous systems, in addition to diet and healthy lifestyle choices through
various instructional strategies and activities. The unit is designed to build off of knowledge,
skills, and attitudes attained from previous grades, and develop a substantial foundation of
knowledge, critical thinking skills, appropriate lab procedures, and inquisitive experience from
the material presented within this unit. The unit is relevant and authentic to students lives and
important to learn and understand for the following reasons:
The ability to analyze and recognize the connection and relationship between the
circulatory and digestive systems, and how they interact in maintaining a healthy lifestyle
The ability to analyze and assess disorders of the digestive and circulatory systems as a
result of genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors
The ability to differentiate and explain the structure and function of plant and animal cell
parts, and thoroughly discuss cell theory
Identify and assess the general life functions common to all living systems
The purpose of this unit within the course is to offer Grade 10 students an opportunity to engage
within fundamental biology by means of exploring human systems, and differentiating and
discussing cells and cell theory. This unit is relative to the audience of this class by
demonstrating effects of healthy and unhealthy body systems, promoting how cells work, as well
as discussing factors such as eating disorders, diabetes, and heart concerns. The skills presented
in this unit are foundational for the development of scientific inquiry, in addition to utilizing
critical thinking skills to further our investigation. Aspects of the unit such as the history of
science, scientific literacy, critical inquiry, indeed many sections of the program of studies will be
addressed through thorough instruction, relevant assignments and examinations. From all that
has been addressed within this rationale, the attitudes of students within this class are expected
to be exemplary, as lab safety, collaboration, and engagement are outcomes necessary for
success. Leading by example, being honest, respecting others, and striving towards contributing
information and knowledge into the unit material is exemplary behaviour to be expected.
General Learning Outcomes for Unit
Students will:
C1: Describe, in general terms, the exchange of matter by the digestive and circulatory
systems, the functional relationship between the two systems and the need for a healthy
diet and lifestyle
C2: Describe disorders of the digestive and circulatory systems as imbalances induced by
genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors
C3: Describe, in general terms, the structure and function of plant and animal cell parts;
and trace the development of cell theory
C4: Identify and compare, in general terms, the life functions common to living systems,
from cells to organ systems
