    ofpeoplewhoidentifywithBuddhistphilosophieswhetheritbestrictfollowersofthereligionor
    thosewhosimplytrytoemployitscoreteachingsintotheireverydaylife.Buddhistimmigrants
    havebeenslowlymakingtheirwaytoAmericaforthelast100yearsandasaresultboth
    cultureshaveborrowedinfluencesfromeachotherovertime.

    ItmaynotbeobvioustomostAmericans,butBuddhistimmigrantshavecreatedarich
    cultureinthiscountry.Lookingatthetwoseparatelyyouwouldthinkthattheywouldnotbea
    goodmixasAmericancultureisperceivedtobefastpacedandunforgiving,whereasBuddhist
    cultureiscenteredaroundbeinTheoverarchinggoalofBuddhismistoreachenlightenment,a
    profoundunderstandingoftheworld,throughtheteachingsoftheBuddhacalledthedharma.
    TheBuddhataughtthatenlightenmentcanbeattainedbylearningandunderstandingTheFour
    NobleTruths.TheFirstTruthisthatlifeissuffering,whetheritbephysicalorpsychological.The
    SecondTruthisthatthissufferingcomesfromthewantingorcravingofworldlythingssuchas
    wealthorattention.TheThirdTruthisthatbyeliminatingthiscravingwecanreachtrue
    happinessorNirvana.ThelastoftheNobleTruthsisthepathtoendsufferingandtherefore
    gaintruehappinesslaidoutbytheBuddha,calledTheEightfoldPath.TheEightfoldPathbriefly
    involvesbecomingmindfulofhowyouractionsaffecteverythingaroundyou,developing
    wisdomofTheFourNobleTruths,andgainingtruecompassionforothers.greflectiveandeasy

    going.However,eventhoughtheymakeupamere1%ofthepopulationtheirideologyhas
    becomepervasive.Youcanseeitsinfluenceinpopularmovies,celebrityconvertslikeSteve
    Jobs,inborrowedpracticessuchasyogaorevenintheriseinpopularityofcertainlifestyle
    choiceslikevegetarianism.
    Ithinkinourhighoctanesocietythesimplicityofbuddhistteachingsreallyspeaksto
    somemodernAmericansandasaresultiswhyourshasborrowedsomanyofitsphilosophies
    recently.Buddhismteachesyoutoslowdownandreallytrytounderstandyouractionsandhow
    theyaffecttheworldaroundyou.Notonlythat,butasoursocietycomestothinkaboutsocial
    issuesinamoreprogressivemanner,theteachingsofBuddhismseemtocomplimentthese
    movements,asBuddhistshavebeenpreachingequalityandkindnessforcenturies.
    Literacyplaysacentralroleinalmosteverymajorreligion.Whenthinkingoftheworlds
    majorreligionstheirrespectiveholybooksarenotfarbehindinourminds,theBible,Quran,etc.
    Buddhismissomewhatdifferentinthisregard,asitsmaintextsarenotaswidelyknow,oreven
    ascloselyscrutinizedasotherreligionssacredtexts.
    ReadingaboutBuddhistteachingshavereallyopenedmyeyestoanewwayofthinking.
    Somepeoplemaythinkthatrecognizingthesufferingofeverydaylifemaybegrimor
    pessimistic,butbeingaselfproscribedrealistmyselfitreallyhitshome.Buddhismisvery
    differentfromotherreligionsinthatitisfocusedonachievinghappinessinthisliferatherthan
    livinginacertainwayinordertoimproveyourchancesafterdeath.
