Lesson Plan Guide

Teacher Candidate:

Brittany White

Grade and Topic:

Second Grade Geometry

Mentor Teacher:

Peggy Murdock

Date: 12/03/2015
Length of Lesson: 90 minutes
School: University of Memphis-IDT 3600

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

This lesson plan is a part of unit on geometrical shapes and their attributes.
LESSON OBJECTIVE:
The student will be able to identify and name the geometric shapes (triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagon,
hexagon, and cubes) and recognize their faces and angels given photos with 100% accuracy.
The purpose of this lesson is for the students to learn their geometric shapes correctly. They will be able to
identify the shapes by names, number of angels, and faces. The students will be looking at the different shapes
to put a name with the shape. They will learn what a face and angel is so they can apply that to the shapes given
to them in pictures.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
CCSS.Math.Content.2.G.A.1
Recognize and draw shapes having specified attributes, such as a given number of angles or a given
number of equal faces.1 Identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes.
MATERIALS:
Computer with internet access
http://screencast-o-matic.com/watch/colfhthOVw
Printer
Pencil and paper (for notes)
Microsoft PowerPoint software
The website we will be using for the students to have an example of how to complete their work is
http://screencast-o-matic.com/watch/colfhthOVw . I will upload an instructional video teaching them how about
geometric shapes and how to identify them. The students will also learn how to count their faces and their
angles. Having this video will give the students the knowledge they need in order to complete the worksheet.
The students can use their pencil and paper to take notes, however, the students will have the Screencast video
pulled up on each of their computers. The worksheet may also be used and edited online.
BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:
The key concepts:
Learning the difference between the geometric shapes.
Knowing the shapes by name.
Understanding the definition of a face and apply it to the shape.
Understanding the definition of an angel and apply it to the shape.
Be able to accurately count the faces and angels on the shape
What is the critical academic language (general and technical) that must be addressed in this lesson?
Face
Angel
Cube

Pentagon
Hexagon
Quadrilateral
Triangle
How does this lesson connect with and build on the previous lesson(s)?
In the previous lesson students learned how to identify shapes by their attributes. For an example, a
triangle has three sides. They also learned what constitutes a shape as a shape. Shapes are closed objects
all the way around. Thus, the students gained understanding of basic shapes in the previous lesson.
How do you expect to build on this lesson in subsequent lessons? Students will be able to build on the previous
lesson because in the previous lesson they learned the attributes of the basic shapes. With that knowledge they
can identify the more complex geometric shapes.
Why will you need to plan differentiated activities or assessments? There will be an accommodation needed for
students with need them. Alongside the video, there will be a step-by-step handout for students to follow along
with learning the material. This will allow the students to still have a way to learn the material. However, with
the nature of this lesson, almost all students with or without disabilities will be able to follow along. I am also
available to give any student one on one attention.
PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:
Introduction: I will engage the students by letting them know they will get a chance to watch a video and use
the computers today. Most students get very excited to know they can use the computers to do an assignment.
This will allow the students to stay focused and engaged to follow along with the computers. I will introduce the
topic as geometric shapes and explain how they will learn about them on the computer.
Procedures: The lesson will began at 8:00am
I will ask the class about their current knowledge on shapes. (Does anyone know what a geometric shape
is? Does anyone know what is a triangle? Quadrilateral? Pentagon? Cube? Hexagon?) I will write the
childrens answers on the board. Even if the students dont know the answers, I will allow them to make
educated guesses. This exercise will last until 8:10am.
At 8:11am I will explain the agenda for the day. I will let the class know we will be learning about
geometric shapes today.
One student will read the Common Core standard to the class.
One student will read the learning objective to the class.
By 8:15am I will let the class know we can use the computers!
Everyone will turn their computers on and go to the URL for Screencast written on the board. I will
walk around the classroom to help students log on and to monitor the computer screens.
By 8:25am all students should be logged on. By this time I will call for all students to put their hands in
their lap as I explain the directions and procedures for the day.
(Process I explain the kids) I will let the students know that we will play the video they have on their
screens. The video will teach the lesson for the day. The video will also be displayed on the Smart board
but the students can look at their own computers to follow along. The students have the option to take
notes with pencil and paper if they so choose. After the video is over, I will answer any questions and
clear up any confusion. I will then do check for understanding questions to ensure the students
understood the lesson. The students will write the answers on the board. In addition, the worksheet will
be given out after the video. Worksheets can be done online or on paper. The students will be required
to complete the worksheet in groups of three. The students may use the video and the teacher as a
reference and help. I will then answer any questions the students have. This process will be over by
8:30am.
The video will last approximately ten minutes and I will allow the students to begin their videos.
By 8:45am the video will be over and I will ask if anyone is confused or has a question. Then I will ask
check for understanding questions and allow the students to write the answers on the Smart board.
Check for understanding questions: What does geometric mean? How many sides does each shape have?
Where is the face on a shape? Where is the angel on the shape? This will be over by 9:00am

I will hand out the handouts and put the students in groups of three to work together to answer the
questions. This will be over by 9:05am.
By 9:06am the students will be working in their groups on the assignment.
The students will be finished between 9:30-9:35am
Closure: To close the lesson I will allow one student from each group to stand up and tell the class what their
group learned today. They can present their learnings in a song or dance.

MODIFICATIONS:
There will be given two more worksheets to further asses the child. In addition, there will be two supplemental
videos for the child to watch and a few pages out of the textbook to read for further help. I will also be available
for any tutoring sessions before school, after school, and during recess.
The students who excel will be given a group project in teams of four that include a fun with food segment. The
kids will be allowed to make shapes out of spaghetti noodles and paste them on construction paper. All students
who remain on task throughout the day will be given a sticker before they leave to go home.
