Project 2: Morphology
1. Passage- pg 15 Foundations of Earth Science
All science is based on the assumption that the natural world behaves in a consistent and
predictable manner. The overall goal of science is to discover the underlying patterns in the
natural world and then to use this knowledge to predict what will or will not happen, given
certain facts or circumstances.
The development of new scientific knowledge involves some basic logical processes that
are universally accepted. To determine what is occurring in the natural world, scientists collect
facts through observation and measurement. Because some error is inevitable, the accuracy of a
particular measurement or observation is always open to questions. Nevertheless, these data are
essential to science and serve as the springboard for the development of scientific theories.
A spirited debate frequently occurs. As a result, extensive research is conducted by
proponents of opposing hypotheses, and the results are made available to the wider scientific
community in scientific journals. (150 words)
