DepthinLiterature

WritingandLiteratureisaformofart.Likeart,ithasbeenusedtocultivateand
communicateideas,discoveriesandtheemotionsofpeoplelives.Eachpiecewithadeep
backgroundfromwhatitswriterwasinfluencedby.Fromtheknowledgegainedfromarticlesof
researchortoexperiencesofourdaytodaylives.Myinitialbeliefofliteraturewasthatdepth
gainedinwritingwasusedtoexpressonesperspectivetoanaudience,howeverasliterature
gotmoreadvancedinHighSchoolmynotionofitchangedto,theartofliteratureandthe
literarydevicesbehindit,wastonotonlyamediumforexpressionbutthedepthinvolvedwasa
waytoproveaperspectivefromyoursupport.From
gatheringinformationandcitingfromwhat
othersasconcreteevidence,itssomethingtoshowhowyourandhadsupportfromotherswho
believedinthesametruth.

Inmiddleschool,literaturewastaughtastoolconcepttohelpyoucommunicateyour
ideas,andestablishthefundamentalsofformingadecentargument.
Writingwasapracticeof
buildingourknowledgeofthedifferentareasinliterature,fromreadingdifferenttextsand
interpretingthemtodevelopingstructureinourresearchthathelpedusshowwhatwelearned.
Therewasalotofroomforcreativityintermsofusingandfindingliteracydevicestohelpyou
describeorexpresswhatyourfeel.Atthatmoment,writingwasmoreofapersonal
communicativepractice.Fromallthepoems,essaysandresearchwewrotetherewereno
incentivestouseourwritingprovewhatourpiecesmeanttousthroughthedepthofour
support.Theimportanceofgoodliteraturethathadthepotentialtochangethemindsetof
someonesperspectivewaslackinginMiddleSchoolandmyinterest,untilHighSchool.

TheEnglishcoursesinHighSchoolwerenotthetypicalcurriculum,itstillalignedwiththemain
focusforformingstrongargumentativeperspectives,anddevelopingaanalyticalmindsetfrom
discoveringavarietyofstyles.Atthatpoint,writingwasnolongeraboutdescription,ithad
changedfocustobemoreaboutpersuasionandstructure.Itwasastruggleatfirsttokeepall
thoughtsinstructure,withthebalancedsupportandwhilekeepingfluidity.Myexperiencewith
literaturemademefeeluncomfortablewiththechallengeoforganizingideasandscriptinga
wellwrittendraft.However,throughthecoursessuchas,CommunicationsandGlobalTopics,
wefocusedonstudyingdifferentstylesofwritingfromanumberofreadings.Thishadputina
practicetoidentifydifferentliterarydevices,approachestoliteratureandseehowwewoulduse
themorwhereitcouldbeseenfromexamplesrelevanttotodaysworld.
ALongWayGone
a
memoiraboutachildsolider,helpedusidentifyhowtoneplayedaroleinhowthereaderwould
followthroughthebook,playingwiththeemotionsandtheatmospherethepassagepresented.

Thisshowedmehowtoorganizetheflowofmywritingandhowtotransitiontheemotionsor
thefeelofthepassagetoavidlybringthereadersin.ThedepthinAldusHuxleysinthe
dystopianutopiain
BraveNewWorld,
showcasehowdepthwasextremelyimportantinwriting
andHuxleyusednumerousexampleofliterarydeviceswithinthatbook,especiallythe
metaphorsheusedtocompareoursocietytohis.ExampleslikethemodelTbeingthereligion
andcapitalism.Howsexandlove,werenotconnectedunderafamily.Eachexampleinhis
writingdroveustoresearchdeeperanddwellonhowitdidnotcontrastwithourworldtoday.
Researchingaboutabortionsandtheglobaleconomyandthenatureofreligion.Fromallthat
researchdonebehindthebookandfurtherlookingintoourtimes,taughtmehowliteratures
depthwascomprisedoflayersofideologiesthatresonatedwithwhatthewriterperceived.From
Huxleysstyle,itbecameeasetopracticehoworganizenumerousideasbehindliterarydevices
suchasmotifsandsymbols.Theliteraturewewentoverfromthesecourses,builtmean
understandingofhowinwritingyouneededtohaveastrongpracticeintoneandstructure.This
establishedagoodargumenttoone,getintothereadersemotionsandtwo,provethatother
resourcesbackyouupinaconcisemanner.FromthisstyleIwasabletoengageinwritingby
writingspeechesformy2yearcampaignanddraftupabusinessplanfora3Dprinting
companytheranintothefinalsforacompetition.Writinghasbecomemoreofawayto
persuadeindepth,whatIfoundandthesupportwithit,ratherthanawaytocommunicatewhat
Ifeel.

Writinghasbeenachallengeformeintermsofskillandlikingitbut,frommyexperiencein
reallydivingdeepintowhatliteratureisandpracticalusefrommypersonalwork.My
appreciationforithasdefinitelygrown,frommyunderstandingindevelopingskillsinwriting
argumentativeessaysoranalyzingcomplextext.Ithastaughtmehowtoitisnotonlyatoolfor
expressionbutanartofpersuasion.IfurtherwanttochallengemyselfinwritinginENGW1111
tobuildmyskillsfromstudyingmorestylesandpracticesofliterature.SoIcancontinuetoshow
inmywritingthedepthfromwhatIhavelearned.
