EdTPA Indirect Instruction Lesson Plan

Subject: Comparing Butterfly and Animal Life
Cycles
Common Core/Essential Standard Objective:
2.L.1.2 Compare life cycles of different animals
such as, but not limited to, mealworms,
ladybugs, crickets, guppies or frogs.

Central Focus: Being able to determine two similarities and

two differences between the life cycle of a butterfly and the
life cycle of an animal.
Date submitted: November 12, 2015 Date taught:

Daily Lesson Objective: After research, students will accurately compare the butterfly life cycle to an animal
life cycle, with two similarities and two differences.
21st Century Skills: Collaboration,
communication, self-direction

Academic Language Demand (Language Function and

Vocabulary):

Prior Knowledge: Students know that different animals spend varying periods of time in each stage of the life
cycle. Students know that animals might look the same, similar, or completely different at specific stages of
development. They also know how to make a venn diagram in word.

Activity

1. Engage

2. Explore

3. Explain

4. Elaborate

Description of Activities and Setting

Students will be asked to share what they previously learned about the
life of a butterfly (CFU). Create a list on the smart board to record what
they answer (CFU). They will watch 1 video as a class about the life
cycle of a butterfly then will watch 2 more videos on ladybug life
cycles.
Students will be divided into groups (3-4 students each). They each will
have a different life cycle of the butterfly and write it on a piece of
paper to share with the class. Each student must add one thing to the list
to make sure they understand the life cycle of a butterfly. Then they will
make a separate list on a separate piece of paper about the life cycle of
a ladybug, they will work together as a group doing this and also have
access to the internet
Then one group member will have to come up to the board and put the
life cycle in order then share the life cycle of a butterfly as review. Then
a different group member from each group will come up and share what
they have learned about the life cycle of a lady bug from their
collaboration and research. The other group members may take notes
on what they might not have found about the life cycle of a ladybug.
Using word, students will remain in groups and create a venn diagram
that has similarities and differences of the life cycle of the butterfly and
ladybug. There will be an example of a venn diagram on the smart
board with similarities and differences between teachers and parents to
make sure the student understand a venn diagram and have an example
to look at. There will also be directions on the board for the venn

diagram (butterfly goes on the left and ladybug goes on the right).
Students will be evaluated based off three levels. Mastery, partial
mastery, and non-mastery based off what they provide as a group.
Mastery:

5. Evaluate
Assessment Methods
of
all objectives/skills

Being able to successfully determine two similarities and two

differences between the life cycle of a butterfly and the animal
of their choice.

Partial Mastery:

Only being able to successfully determine one similarity and/or

difference between life cycles.

Non-Mastery:

Not being able to successfully compare the two life cycles.

Targeted Students
Modifications/Accommodations:
ELL Students: Will be provided pictures with
words in their native language as well as what the
word is in English. They will also given them pre
made venn diagram that has the lady bug, and
butterfly already on it with 1 bullet points on both
sides. Student will also be evaluated based off if
they can successfully find one other similarity and
difference

Student/Small Group Modifications/Accommodations:

ELL Students: When students are put into groups I will
make sure they are working with another student who
could translate what we are doing for the ELL student if
they have any further questions that I cannot answer.
