How does teen pregnancy affect the life and development of the baby and mother?
Becoming pregnant as a teenager may cause financial hardships and education and health issues
for both the mother and the baby.
"Teenage Pregnancy: MedlinePlus." U.S National Library of Medicine. U.S. National Library of
Medicine. Web. 23 Sept. 2015.
This website explains how having a baby at such a young age can carry extra health risks
for the mother and child. For example, teens have a higher risk for pregnancy-related high blood
pressure due to the lack of prenatal care/vitamins. Premature birth and low birth weight is also a
major risk factor for the babies. There is also a page of frequently asked questions for the
viewers. This page is very helpful for pregnant teens and teens that plan to become pregnant
because it is full of information including where childbirth classes are located in their area to
food that should be avoided during their pregnancy.

"Reproductive Health: Teen Pregnancy." Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention, 5 May 2015. Web. 23 Sept. 2015.
I chose this website because it has a lot of valuable information including birth rates (by
race and ethnicity), knowledge about sexual issues, and many different reasons why teen
pregnancy should be prevented. According to this web page, teenage pregnancy and birth are

significant contributors to high school dropout rates among girls. The girls and their children are
also subject to increasing health problems and face more trouble throughout their lives. This
website also provides graphics and charts showing birth rates. According to these charts, as of
2013, the Hispanic race has the highest rate of teen pregnancy in the United States. Although this
source has mostly charts and numbers, it is a very reliable source of my research.

"Teen Pregnancy | The National Campaign." Teen Pregnancy | The National Campaign. Web. 23
Sept. 2015.
Of the three websites that I have chosen for my research, this one is by far the most
reliable and my favorite. It is new, easy to navigate, and is clearly printed and written. Not only
can teen pregnancy cause health risks, but can cause a number of other social issues such as:
Poverty and income, the childs well-being, out-of-wedlock births, responsible fatherhood,
education, child welfare, and other risky behavior. According to surveys, just 38% of teen girls
that have a baby before the age of 18 get a high school diploma. As of 2014, the teen birth rate
was 24 births per 1,000 teen girls (age 15 through 19), and there were 249,067 babies born to
teen girls.
