5 BHS STUDENTS RECOGNIZED BY


NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP CORPORATION
Senior Brighid Nugent was named a Semifinalist in
the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Competition.
Approximately 16,000 Semifinalists were named in the
61st annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
Brighid will have the opportunity to continue in the
competition for some 7,400 National Merit
Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be
offered next spring.
To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award,
Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to
advance to the Finalist level of the competition.
About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to
attain Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalists
will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the
Merit Scholar title.
In addition to Brighids recognition, three other
students the National Merit Scholarship Corporation
named four other students as Commended Students.
Students recognized include: seniors Hannah
Charanza, Haille Goodman, Cooper McCall, and
Thomas Schwalen.

About 34,000 Commended Students were recognized


throughout the nation for their exceptional academic
performance.
These students placed among the top five percent of
more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2016
competition by taking the 2014 Preliminary SAT/
National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

VIKINGATHLETICS

Swimming

The Viking swim season started this month with the Tomball Kickoff Invitational.
The combined girls and boys team placed 5th overall out of 14 teams with many of
our swimmers dropping time and earning personal best times.
First place finishes include:
Julia Cook: 200IM (2:07.07) and 100 back (58.35)
Joel Coppernoll: 500free (5:06.07)
Marco Gutierrez: 100 breast (1:03.92)

Tennis

The Viking tennis team finished fall district


regular season play with a 4-3 record beating
Livingston, Huntsville, Caney Creek, and
Rudder.
They will face Pflugerville Connaly on Oct 22
for the area tournament.
