Observation Task 4: Observing a teacher during a Science

Lesson
Objective
To observe Science teaching in action and begin to understand effective strategies
for Science teaching and learning in groups.

Procedure

You will need a copy of the Observation Table:

Before the Observation

Arrange to observe a lesson that focuses on Science and discuss the lesson
with the teacher beforehand so you can know the Objectives and the lesson
development.
Ask the teacher what strategies she will use to help her deliver the lesson.
Get an idea of the Inquiry/experiment the students will do.

Objective:
1. To identify the definitions in the lesson.
2. To understand the differences between the animal cells and the plant cells.
3. To memorize the names of the cells parts and label them.

Strategies:
1. Using PowerPoint slides.
2. Whole class, so the information that had been introduced could pass to all of the
students.
3. Small group, so that the students will work together and support each others
answers.

Inquiry/Experiment
Making a cell
1. Make the students engaging by asking some question to activate their prior
knowledge.
2. Let the students read a little bit about the cells.
3. Make the students to talk about what they understood after learning a little bit
from what they read.
4. Let the students ask question to learn more things that they didnt know.
5. Ask the students some questions to evaluate their understanding.

After the Observation:

1. What was the objective of the lesson?
To know the difference between the Animal cells and the Plant cells.
2. Was the objective achieved?
Most of the lesson was achieved, but few students still didnt understand
what id the difference between the two cells.
3. How were key terms introduced and explained?
By explaining where these two cells can be fined, and what each of them
contains.
4. How did the teacher build the teaching/leaning? How did the lesson progress?
The teacher used the PowerPoint while explaining the lesson, and it went
very well and the students were engaging during the lesson.
5. Did teacher do whole-class teaching or group work? Why?
It was a whole class teaching, because the lesson needs to be explained
for the whole class, so she can know who did understand and who didnt
understand.
6. Was there an inquiry/experiment? Describe the process.
Yes there was, and she let them to do cells by using clay, and she did it
first in front of them step by step.
1. She used a plate to be like a wall for the cells.
2. She used clay to make the cells, because its soft and they can make
it as a circle.
3. She spread some cooked jelly on the plate (Soft object).
4. Then, she put the main elements of the plant cells.
7. Did students record the experiment?
Yes, she let them do it after she finished, and she was walking through
them and helps them, also she was asking them about the names, to know
if they did understand it.
8. How much teaching was done in L1? Why do you think the teachers used L1?
The lesson was 45 minutes, the teacher used 23 minutes to explain, and
the students needs 22 minutes to do the experiment and to answer the
questions. The teacher used L1 because its in the curriculum.
9. What was the purpose of these?
Let the students know the structure of the cells and why it is in the living
things.
10. Were there any other resources/materials used to deliver the lesson?
Yes there was, like:
- PowerPoint.
- Posters that represent the cells pictures.
