LEARNING OBJECTIVES
GLO 2 1: Investigate, with guidance, the nature of things, demonstrating an
understanding of the procedures followed.
SLO Explore and Investigate: manipulate materials and make observations
that are relevant to questions asked.
GLO 2-2: Recognize pattern and order in objects and events studied; and, with guidance,
record procedures and observations, using pictures and words; and make predictions and
generalizations, based on observations.
SLO Reflect and Interpret: describe what was observed, using captioned
pictures and oral language.
SLO Reflect and Interpret: describe and explain results; explanations may
reflect an early stage of concept development.
GLO 2 9: Recognize the effects of heating and cooling, and identify methods for heating
and cooling.
SLO 8: Describe the role of insulation in keeping things hot or cold, and identify
places where some form of insulation is used; e.g., clothing, refrigerator, coolers, homes.
SLO 9: Identify materials that insulate animals from the cold; e.g., wool, fur and
feathers; and identify materials that are used by humans for the same purpose.
Students will:
1. Experiment with manipulatives to observe scientific results.
2. Illustrate observations.
3. Explain results of experiment in own words.
4. Identify places where insulation is used.
5. Define insulation.
6. Discover how animals use insulation.

Key Questions:

Products/Performances:

Are students able to participate like scientists during

experiments?
Are students making well deduced observations?
Do students acknowledge a scientific procedure and
purpose for the experiment?
Can students deduce information from activity?
What is insulation?
What are observations?
What is the purpose of experiments?
How do animals use insulation?
What are some ways humans use insulation?
What were the results of your experiment?

Expectations for science experiments: teacher and

student side
Lab report walk-through
1. Make a class hypothesis.
2. List materials.
3. List procedures.
4. Review observations.
5. Discuss results (purpose of experiment)
Split class in half: put 5 min timer up. And Agenda
Body
Half of class will work independently on stations about
insulation:
1. Using headphones, watch a video about polar
bears
2. Try creating an insulator on the app
3. Read about thermal insulators
4. Fill in human and animal mini-books while
working through the stations.
5. Work on BBC worksheet if finished early
Assess mini-book completion. Ensure students
understand that at 5 min, they must
independently move stations. Assign 1 student
to be your timer setter to re-set the timer each
time (aka Sam or Jayna)
Half of class will work with teacher at experiment:
1. Make predictions
2. Review lab report procedures
3. Work through activity
4. Work through observations
5. Tell teacher the results of your experiment
If we are falling behind in time, students will complete
their observations during the independent stations (for
first rotation). Second rotation needs to be on time.
Assess the quality of the observations completed.
