Theme: HeatIntroduction
Subject/ Topic/
I. Objectives
What is the main focus of this lesson?
To introduce the concept of heat to students and to assess what students already know about heat
How does this lesson tie in to a unit plan? (If applicable.)
This is the first lesson in a unit all about heat. It is all the first lesson in a larger unit about energy, with
heat being the first kind and light and sound being the other two.
What are your objectives for this lesson? (As many as needed.) Indicate connections to
applicable national or state standards. If an objective applies to only certain students write the
name(s) of the student(s) to whom it applies.
Students will be able to
Identify what they already know about heat energy
Explain what is similar about a variety of objects that are heat sources or conserve heat
Explain what is different about a variety of objects that are hat sources or conserve heat

Teacher
Students
Introduce students to the new unit
about energy. Tell them that we are
going to begin a unit all about heat
energy.
Before we can do that, however, we
Students complete the What Do You
must first figure out what we already
Think? paper individually
know about heat.
Tell students that they will each get a
What Do YOU Think? paper
Once students are finished, collect
papers
Place three pictures on the board (the
sun, a microwave, a glove)
Tell the students that we have three
items that they have to figure out how
they relate or dont relate. What is
similar about them? What is different?
Place the students in groups of three
Students evaluate pictures and discuss in
and provide
groups what they think about them
Teacher monitors as students discuss,
asking questions and provoking
thought.
Questions: Do they do anything
important for us? Whats similar about
the sun and the microwave? Anything? Each group shares with the class what they
discovered about the three objects
What are these items used for?
Teacher gathers students back together
after student discussion
Class discusses the various thoughts
and responses towards the three
items.
Teacher leads discussion in establishing
-Each item has to do with heat
-Not each item gives off heat.
-We do need each item for heatrelated activities.
Teacher closes by asking the class to
Students name three reasons they think
name three reasons why we need heat
we need heat
