Learning Activity #3

chooses three, I choose two from the popsicle sticks.
Introduce the book, Were Going on a Leaf Hunt. Have students
repeat each phrase after me. Do actions as needed. Leaves
can be scattered on the floor for students to pick up when
called for.
Explain to the students that we will be going outside to collect
leaves. They are to look for a leaf that is intact and not too dry.
Color is their choice, but attempt to find a FALL colour. Discuss
the size of leaves. Some are big, some are medium, some are
small. Show them some exemplars. (Also have exemplars on
tables). Discuss why leaves change color (trees are beginning
their long winters nap. The leaves fall off while the tree goes
to sleep. When they stop making food, the green color goes
away, but we can still see the yellows and browns that were
hidden by the green.)
Class rules: They must stay within sight of me so I can talk
without shouting. They must choose at least one leaf, but no
more than four. They can try to find different kinds and sizes.
Leaves are to be placed in their bags to be brought back in.
EXPLAIN THAT WHEN WE COME IN WE WILL GO STRAIGHT TO
THE TABLES. EXPLAIN COLORS AND HAVE THEM MAKE A MARK
ON EACH WORD TO HELP THEM RECOGNIZE THE COLORS.
Students will bring bags back to their table spots and then
examine their leaves for color, size, and shape. Spend some
time showing the other students their leaves. (Pair and Share).
Why they like their leaves will be scribed at the bottom. Before
their leaf is stapled to the sheet, they should do a sheet of
coloured rubbings to take home.
Closure
