CHAPTER 11

Motivation, is something that almost everyone wants to have all of the time. It is also
something that isnt easily obtainable all of the time. As a teacher it is important to be able to
know how to motivate your students. Students will not always be motivated all of the time, even
though teachers want them to be. It is also important to understand what strategies you plan to
use to motivate students.
Motivation is the energizing force in learning and can have a powerful effect on student
success (Eggen & Kauchak 2014). Some instructional strategies that could help to increase
motivation for students can include lecture, guided discovery, and cooperative learning. There
are also some essential teaching skills that play an important role in student motivation.
Essential teaching skills are the abilities that all teachers should demonstrate in their
teaching (Eggen & Kauchak 2014). Some essential teaching skills include caring, being well
organized and being able to attract students attention through focus. An example of a caring in
the classroom is having a high personal efficacy and positive expectations for students. Being
well organized can mean lessons are on time, materials are prepared, and have a well-established
routine in the classroom. An example of being able to use focus to attract students attention is
involving students through questioning and providing feedback (Eggen & Kauchak 2014).
I plan on using a few different instructional strategies in my future classroom. I plan on
using lecture/discussion I will lead a discussion on a subject and ask the students and have all the
students participate in the lecture to be able to ensure they are retaining the information. I also
plan on using the guided discovery that is discussed in the book. I will have the students relate
the concepts we are learning to real life and to other concepts in the class. I plan on using
cooperative learning as well. I will do this by having the students work in groups at least once a
day to help them learn social interaction skills. I will also use direct instruction in my future

classroom. I will do this by verbally giving the students instructions and also by having a written
form of the instructions for the students as well.
Motivation is important for students and important for teachers to know how to motivate
their students. Teachers can do this by knowing the different and effective teaching strategies.
Teachers can also help with student motivation by knowing what instructional strategies to use.
