I learned just how fast things such as, diarrhea and vomiting can cause
severe dehydration and sickness in the pediatric patients. I also learned
that some assessments are done differently on children, than they are
on adults. An example of this would be taking the pulse of a child
versus an adult; you take adults pulse radially, whereas you typically
take a small childs pulse apically because their radial pulses are still
to weak. This competency explains the importance of critical thinking
and a good knowledge base on pediatric patients. I think everything I
learned in this course was meaningful because it taught me so many
new things that I did not know about children, and also allowed me to
see how important it is to know your skills, assessments, and current
background of common childhood disorders because typically
pediatric patients are to young to verbalize to you what is wrong with
them. We as nurses, need to step up and know just what to do for them
to make them more comfortable, etc.
I would give myself a proficiency rating of good. I do believe I
know this competency in theory and in scenarios. I studied my
textbook, powerpoints, nursing journals online, as well as simply
googled many different disorders to form a more structured
knowledge base for myself. I hope to one day work on a pediatric
floor so that I can experience all the things I have learned in this
course, and understand everything that much more.I believe there is
always more to learn as a practical nurse, but hard work and
dedication has allowed me to learn new skills and grasp a better sense
about the pediatric side of nursing.
