MCR3U Sequences and Series Assignment

“a la Pizzeria“

Due Wednesday March 31st, 2010 at the end of class

So, you thought you might get away with not doing any questions – eh? Think again!

1. Today, we ordered two (2) party trays and one (1) round pizza for our class. Each party-
tray pizza was cut into 24 slices and the round one had 8 slices. If we consider today to
be Day 1, and on Day 2 we plan to order 4 party tray pizzas and 1 round pizza, and on
Day 3 we plan to order 6 party tray pizzas and 1 round pizza, and on Day 4 we plan to
order 6 party tray pizzas and 1 round pizza, and so on ….

a. How many slices of pizza will we have on day 15? on day n?

b. How many slices of pizza, in total, will we consume over the next 15 days?
[assuming of course that we eat all of the pizza slices that we order]

2. In order to pay for your portion of the pizza each and every day, the following rule has
been adopted: On Day 1, you are to pay 1 cent, on Day 2 you are to pay 2 cents, on Day
3 you are to pay 4 cents, on Day 4 you are to pay 8 cents and so on.

a. How much will you be expected to pay on day 15? on day n?

b. How much will you pay, in total, over the next 15 days?

3. Along with the pizza, we have consumed some beverages, and of course, have decided to
recycle appropriately. The cans have been arranged in a triangular pile such that the top
row contains one can and each row below the top row contains one more can than the
row above. If the bottom row contains 27 cans, how many cans are in the pile?

4. After we consume our pizza each day, we use our napkins to design special rectangles
that are covered with pizza messes. On Day 1, the dimensions of the special rectangle are
2 cm by 3 cm, on Day 2 the dimensions are 2 cm by 9 cm, on Day 3 the dimensions are 2
cm by 27 cm and so on. If the pattern continues, what is the total area of the special
rectangles from the first 15 days of pizza?
