Multimodal Reflection, Part 2
My interest in Exercise Science and its popularity here at Appalachian State was
the driving factor behind my decision to publish a visual on its statistics, in an attempt to
persuade individuals into following a career within its field. The field of exercise science
houses many career possibilities, with the most popular being physical and occupational
therapies. Through this project, I decided to focus on these two careers specifically and
decided a set of brochures would be the best way to present this information. While a
target audience was not specifically stated, the audience was guided towards those
enrolled in an undergraduate program studying or considering studying exercise science,
or those getting ready to apply for post-graduate programs within these two careers. This
target audience can be seen through the information revolving around qualities needed to
be accepted into these programs, what is expected during the programs, and what should
be anticipated during a typical day on the job.
At the beginning of this project, I found it somewhat hard to conduct research on
the field since I thought I knew a majority of what it had to offer and other important bits
of information about it. Using a set of brochures as my visual, and the information I had
considered as an exercise science major, I was able to construct these around target
information. Using this specific information allowed me to illustrate important facts
about the field and its possible careers, while staying away from including too much

information. The limited space offered by the brochures restricted the information put
into the visual and called for the inclusion of only the most valuable and informative
information. More research was conducted and needed to get additional statistical facts
about each career, for example the annual salary for each; however, most of the
information came from previous knowledge of each career and what had been relayed via
multiple advisors at Appalachian. Including this information gathered on a more personal
level, allowed, in my opinion, a more efficient approach to connecting with the audience
as we both went through the process of understanding requirements of the fields
simultaneously.
As an exercise science major, I understand the value of this information and the
ways it can influence the decision of those interested in these careers. Researching
possible career options can be a little overwhelming at first; a feeling that I felt as I was
going through this process. The use of brochures allowed me to capture the interest of my
audience as well as comforting them with its visual layout. In other words, the inclusion
of pictures, the small size of the publication as a whole, and the important yet short
amounts of information provided by the brochure was made to be visually appealing to
the target audience. As college students, individuals may sometimes enjoy smaller and
more simplistic publications opposed to lengthy research articles theyre required to read
in some classes. The shorter lengths of these publications aided in drawing the audience
in and keeping them engaged throughout the publications entirety. Additionally, these
short but valuable pieces of information laid the background for each career in hopes of
sparking some interest in the audience, which would then lead to further individual
research in the particular career. The inclusion of visuals throughout each publication not

only showed visual evidence of what professionals in each career do on a daily basis or
the work environments in which they may be placed, but also stood to show the audience
that each individual publication was more laid back than typical school publications, in
hopes of again comforting them.
The arrangement of each research subheading conducted on each career was
placed specifically on different folds of the page for better organization in the
publications. Additionally, the arrangement of these subheadings allows the audience to
bounce from one topic to the next to gather the information they are most interested in
about that given career. For example, if someone were more interested in the education
requirements needed for each career, they could flip right to those requirements without
having to read the entire publication to find these statistics.
The inclusion of personal information as well as research conducted online
proved these brochures to be of non-fiction orientation. The inclusion of non-fiction
elements into the brochure, helped influence the audience by showing true and supported
facts about each career, that would stand as the basis for which option best fit each
individual from the audience. While these publications included large amounts of
personal information as well as statistical information, it lacked some additional elements
of ethos, pathos, and logos. I plan to incorporate more of these elements in my final draft
by connecting more on a personal level with my target audience. Including more
examples of how these professions change the lives of those they impact on a daily basis,
would add to the emotional aspects of the publication, while showing more statistics
behind the careers, for example, the average number of students accepted into graduate
programs for these careers, would aid in showing some elements of pathos and logos.

This inclusion may also indirectly show the importance of doing well in a give
undergraduate program.
This project was not only beneficial in relaying information about our selected
professions and majors, but also beneficial in helping us see if these profession were
something we personally wanted to peruse. Before beginning this project, I knew a good
amount about both of these careers; however, after conducting additional research I began
to question how I really felt about them. If it were not for this project, I do not believe I
would have been able to see that I was either not aware of everything incorporated into
these careers or that they did not offer what I truly wanted to do in the future. I hope that
these publications are able to provide all the information individuals may need to solidify
an chosen career path for them.
