Hello by Adele
Hello is a song by English singer and songwriter Adele. It was released on October 23,
2015, by XL Recordings as the lead single from her upcoming third studio album, 25. Adele co-wrote the
song with her producer, Greg Kurstin. Hello is a piano ballad with soul influences, and lyrics that
discuss themes of nostalgia and regret. Upon release, the song received acclaim from music critics, who
compared it favourably to Adeles previous work and praised the songs lyrics and Adeles vocals.
Hello attained international commercial success reaching number one in twenty-eight countries
including the United Kingdom, where it became her second UK number-one single, following Someone
Like You, and has the largest opening week sales in three years. In the United States, Hello debuted
atop the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Adeles fourth number-one on the chart and breaking several
records, including becoming the first song with over a million digital sales in a week.
It appears to continue the theme of Adeles previous album, 21, which was a breakup
record, but this time it is the singer who has broken someones heart. On the surface Adele appears to be
trying to get in touch with a former lover. However, despite her reputation for breakup anthems, Adele
told Ryan Seacrest that she is not addressing anyone specifically. I have a little curiosity about my past
now that I am a grown up, the 25 singer explained. We are not kids anymore and stuff like that. It is
kind of a hello to all my old friends, all the relationships I have had, all my old teachers, my little me
when I was seven or eight, and also a bit of hello to all my fans because I have been gone for so long.
The opening lyric, Hello, its me is the name of a Todd Rundgren song about a different
kind of aching conversation, in that one Rundgren is breaking up with a girl. Adele and Greg Kurstin
were supposed to work together on music for 21, but it did not work out. When they finally arranged to
write songs for the English singers follow-up record in 2014, the American producer could not help
feeling nervous. Although that changed once he set foot in the studio, and they started working on such
tracks as Hello, Water Under the Bridge and Million Years Ago. She is just so wonderful to be
around. She is funny and she is just so down-to-earth. You can immediately relate to her and connect with
her, Kurstin told Associated Press. I really felt very comfortable around her because she makes you feel
that way. She is just cool, and then she gets on the microphone and of course blows your mind.
Adele explained the songs meaning to i-D. The song is about hurting someones
feelings but it is also about trying to stay in touch with myself, which sometimes can be a little bit hard to
do, she said. It is about a yearning for the other side of me. When I am away, I really, really miss my
life at home. The way that I feel when I am not in England is desperation. I cannot breathe anywhere
else. I am so attached to my whole life here, Adele added. I get worked up that I am missing out on
things. So Hello is about wanting to be at home and wanting to reach out to everyone I have ever hurt,
including myself, and apologize for it.
Hello shifted 1.1 million downloads in its first seven days in the US, becoming
the first song ever to sell over a million downloads in a week. It broke the previous record of Flo Ridsa
Right Round, which was downloaded 636,000 times in 2009. Fans have pointed out similarities
between Hello and Tom Waits 1973 song Martha, which centers around a telephone conversation
between the narrator and an old flame. Its lyrics include: Hello, hello there, is this Martha?
Greg Kurstin told Entertainment Weekly how Waits inspired the tune, saying:
She did not want to just go through and write a pop song with any particular formula. We talked about
Tom Waits, and different storytellers like that. I think that was the idea, that we wanted to do something
that was very honest about where she was at right now, and she wanted to do something that was real and

believable. There was a six-month gap between writing the verses and the chorus of Hello.
Hello by Adele, about picking up the pieces of a broken heart as she belts the
chorus- Hello from the other side/ I mustve called a thousand times/ To tell you that Im sorry, for
everything that Ive done, - the power is so guttural and so forceful that it is like she is elegantly
projectile vomiting her heart. The ecstatic reaction the song has already gotten just hours after its release
speaks to the singers ability to live up to expectations. Three years of anticipation puts a lot of pressure
on a comeback single. It is hard to satisfy fans who are starved for new music from their favorite divas.
With that being said, it was smart of Adele to return to that sepia-toned eternal autumn where she lives
and delivers a classic ballad that aggressively accomplishes everything we want from an Adele song: big
voice, big emotion, and structural simplicity. The amount we wish that we were in a car screaming along
to it on the radio right now cannot be properly expressed. We all love nothing more than bonding in mass
rhapsody, to the point that any criticism of Hello at this point would be tantamount to blasphemy. It is
the special talent of Adeles writing. She has a direct line into our hearts, the rare person who can speak
and sing about her own personal experience and have it resonate so acutely with our individual journeys.
