Classroom management is organizing and conducting the classroom. Many

consider it as the preservation of order by teacher control. Classroom
management is much more than that. It also includes establishing and
maintaining the classroom environment so that instructional goals can be
materialized. Behrangi (2012) defines classroom management as one of the
factors that influence academic achievement. Van Petegem et al (2006)
argue that teacher to optimize the conditions of the class, must strive to
create a strong learning environment, and he or she may be able to create a
better classroom environment in which everyone has good feeling.
There are two types of motivation - internal and external - that Alfie Kohn
describes as follows: Intrinsic motivation basically means you like what
youre doing for its own sake, whereas extrinsic motivation means you do
something as a means to an end - in order to get a reward or avoid a
punishment. (Alfie K., p.33). Teachers focusing on extrinsic motivation
factors are wrong because such factors are effective on short term, on the
one hand, they cause adverse effects on medium and long term: extrinsic
motivation is likely to erode intrinsic motivation. As extrinsic goes up,
intrinsic tends to come down. The more that people are rewarded for doing
something, the more likely they are to lose interest in whatever they had to
do to get the reward. (Alfie K., p. 33)
Effective classroom managers create orderly and safe environments in which
students feel valued and comfortable, thus setting the appropriate stage for
teaching and learning. To achieve that, they arrange classroom space to
support a variety of independent, small and large group activities (Crane,
2001). Elementary teachers also plan a large area of floor space where
students can group for read-alouds, demonstrations, and class meetings. In
all classrooms, there should be no blind areas where students can be out of
sight. To structure traffic flow and minimize disruption, teachers separate
high-traffic areas such as group work areas, learning centers, students
desks, the teachers desk.
Although not its sole component, discipline is another highly important
aspect of classroom management. Discipline is a systematic way of teaching
students to assume responsibility for their behavioral choices; punishment
focuses upon negative consequences for misbehavior. There are three
approaches to classroom management form a continuum, namely the selfdiscipline approach at one extreme, the instructional approach, the desist
approach at the opposite extreme.
When classroom left unsupervised, some students make poor behavioral
choices. Therefore, you need to be aware of what is going on in the
classroom at all times. This is not an easy task. You need to arrange your
classroom so that you can see students at all times from any vantage point.
When a potential problem arises, a simple pause in conjunction with eye
contact (a teacher look) usually curbs the misbehavior. A well-designed floor
plan also allows you to move quickly from place to place so you can address

potential problems through proximity. Therefore, when arranging your room,

eliminate barriers that may keep you from seeing or readily accessing all
areas of the room.
It is true that classroom management and motivation is a challenging task
for teachers, but the prizes of having students who are motivated, managed
and keen to learn make this hard task worth the endeavour.
