INTERNSHIP II

Domain I- School Community Leadership

Competency 001- The Principal knows how to shape the campus
culture by facilitating the development, articulation, implementation
and stewardship of a vision of learning that is shared and supported by
the school community.

I feel that serving on the Campus Advisory Team this past two years have helped me
understand the broader scope of what it takes to operate a school. I have been able to
hear other teachers perspectives and also hear from community members. I also can
see how every aspect of the schools operation involves all stakeholders. The schools
most important job is to meet the students needs. Therefore, budget, staffing and school
operation needs to be student driven.

Competency 002- The principal knows how to communicate and

collaborate with all members of the school, community, respond to diverse
interests and needs, and mobilize resources to promote student success.

I have experienced that communication is key to leadership. It is

a skill that a good administrator must posses. I experienced that
composing email is an important aspect in todays world. Emails
do not convey any emotions, therefore it is important to make
sure that when composing and email that the messages are clear,
concise, and at the same time making sure that it does not come
off to impersonal.

Competency 003- The principal knows how to act with integrity, fairness,
and in an ethical and legal manner.

As the leader of a campus it is important that you are available for

all, which can sometimes seem overwhelming. However, I
experience that a good leader has an open door policy and is
transparent when it comes to snything pertaining to the school.

Domain II
Competency 004- The principal knows how to facilitate the design and
implementation pf curricula and strategic plans that enhance teaching and
learning; ensure alignment of curriculum, instruction, resources, and
assessment; and promote the use of varied assessments to measure
student performance.

I have sat in on a few leadership meeting on my campus. These

are meetings that the leaders in across Katy Independent School
District (KISD) have every Monday. At this meeting I saw the
leaders check lesson plans for each grade levels. First making
sure plans are in and that the plans have all necessary
components. It was eye opening to see that leaders are checking
to make sure that the learning going on day to day in the
classroom is purposeful and meaning for the students.

Competency 005- The principal knows how to advocate, nurture, and

sustain an instructional program and a campus culture that are conducive
to student learning and staff professional growth.

As part of my action research I am working with an my assistant

principal (AP) to create a tutoring program for struggling student
in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade in the area of reading, writing and math. I
have come to realize that everything from number of students to
materials purchased for students is a major task for the principal.
The principal needs to know what materials are appropriate for
this remedial learning in order to help those student grow.
Additionally, the principal must make sure to have trained and
competent staff available to help those students reach their
fullest potential.

Competency 006- The principal knows how to implement a staff

evaluation and development system to improve the performance of all
staff members, select and implement appropriate models for supervision
and staff development, and apply the legal requirements for personnel
management.

I have not really had experience in this competency as I did not

have an opportunity to observe or implement any systems to
improve performance of staff.

Competency 007- The principal knows how to apply organizational,

decision-making, and problem-solving skills to ensure an effective learning
environment.

In working to facilitate the Guiding Gator intervention program I

came to learn a lot of behind the scene goes on to prepare these
sort of programs. It is important for the administrator to get all
stakeholders involve. This involves parents, teachers and all
faculty members. I had to work with cafeteria staff to get snacks
prepared for after school students. I also worked with custodial
staff to have certain rooms remain open and clean up. There truly
a lot that the principal does to make sure the school environment
is effective for learning.

Domain III
Competency 008- The principal knows how to apply principles of
effective leadership and management in relation to campus budgeting,
personnel, resource utilization, financial management, and technology use.

When I worked with the Guiding Gators intervention program, I

had a some experience with the finance aspect of a schools
budget. I had to make sure all teachers sign time sheet and turn
them in for payments to be distributed. I had to work with the
assistant principal to determine if we had enough Title I funds in
order to maintain the program. Once we determine availbility of
funds we had to make sure that funds were being used
appropriately to promote success.

Competency 009- The principal knows how to apply principles of

leadership and management to the campus physical plant and support
systems to ensure a safe and effective learning environment.

I did have some dealings with maintaining the campus safety. I

am on the campus safety team as well as the other two assistant
principals. We took a two hour class for other health issues, like
allergies and emergency events. We also discussed safety of
entire school in case of an intruder. These meetings were very
informative and shed some light on the enormous responsibility
placed upon the principal in order to keep the school environment
safe.
