States of Matter Unit

Science
Lesson #1
Learning Target:
I can make a prediction using my prior knowledge about solids, liquids and gases.
Look

fors:
Students to make a prediction using their prior knowledge
Students to work collaboratively and synergize to perform the experiment
Students to complete observation sheet with complete sentences

Supplies needed:
Copies of Making Sludge worksheets (30)
Cornstarch (1 cup per group)
Water (1/2 cup per group)
Bowls (1 per group)

Teacher Led:
1. Teacher will explain that we are now
switch from social studies to science.
Teacher will lead a discussion with
students about what science learning
looks like and how everyone should
behavior when we a working on
experiments.
2. Teacher will ask students if they
have ever heard of the word prediction
and what it means to make a
prediction.

Whole group:
4. Students will share what making a

The whole class will come to a
consensus of a definition.
8. Once students have finished
recording their observations, the class
will meet back together to discuss
whole group the observations and have
a discussion if the sludge is a solid,
liquid or a gas.

5. Teach will give each group supplies

and explain to students that they will
need to work collaboratively to
complete the experiment.
Partners/Small group:
3. Student will turn and talk with the
person sitting next to them about what
making a prediction means.

sludge and discuss with each other
what is happening.

Independent:
