Abstract: Jean Piaget (1896 – 1980) was responsible for introducing to the world a theory of learning that had two major principles: 1. Intellectual development proceeds through a series of broad stages. Young children think in a qualitatively different way from adults. 2. All individuals, including children, are active constructors of their own knowledge. The implications of these principles for education are overwhelming. Piaget’s theory inspired major curriculum reforms, and continues to influence educational practice today. In this paper, the above principles and the ramifications they have for early childhood education will be examined.
