In a double doctoral degree programme the student obtains two degrees under the joint supervision of professors at LUT
and its partner university. This also applies to students studying under a cotutelle agreement.

The applicant and the supervisors have read the following policy on international double doctoral degrees at
Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) and accept the criteria by signing the application for doctoral studies.

1.

Double doctoral degree programmes can be arranged with select foreign universities that meet the quality requirements set by LUT for its students
in terms of doctoral studies. The foreign universities must be officially recognised by their national education authorities. Double doctoral degrees
require a written collaboration agreement between LUT and the partner university.

2.

Students completing the double doctoral degree are supervised by a professor or docent from both LUT and its international partner university.
The shared supervision responsibilities are stated in the student's application for doctoral studies, which is signed by both supervisors and the
doctoral student.

3.

Those taking part in a double degree programme apply for a doctoral study right from LUT through regular routes. The doctoral study right must
be applied for at least 12 months before the intended public examination of the dissertation.

4.

The doctoral studies may be completed at LUT, other domestic or international universities or organisations providing doctoral education in
accordance with the requirements set for doctoral studies by LUT.

5.

Students completing a double doctoral degree must conduct research related to the degree at the partner university for the duration of at least
one semester (six months).

6.

Students completing the double degree defend their dissertation in a public examination at either LUT or its partner university. Matters to see to:
The supervisor at LUT is responsible for the progress of the dissertation process at LUT
Choice of the custos
Criteria for choosing an opponent/opponents
Date and arrangements of the public examination (place: LUT and/or partner university)
Impact of the academic year and its schedules on the dissertation process

7.

LUT's practices are to be applied to the examination, language, assessment and publicity of the dissertation.
Especially the following must be taken into account:
Role of the publication committee
Public access to the dissertation (available to the public for ten days before the public examination)
Submission of a statement for assessment according to the schedule agreed
Assessment scale
Impact of the academic year and its schedules on the assessment and graduation

PURPOSE
The supervision plan is made between the doctoral student, supervisor(s) and other possible parties involved. It complements the
postgraduate study plan and the recommendations on supervision practices. With this plan, the parties arrange their collaboration
in the agreed timeframe with a completed doctoral degree as a goal.
Attached there is a list of other issues that may also be essential to discuss in certain cases.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Doctoral students responsibilities
- Is responsible for the progress of the dissertation project and research and for informing the supervisor(s) on the progress
made according to the agreed reporting schedule and the agreed way
- Follows the agreed timetables
- Revises the postgraduate plan annually, or more often if necessary
- Carefully prepares for the meetings
- Informs supervisors, supervisory group and other relevant parties of all the changes that considerably affect working conditions,
progress of the dissertation project or keeping the agreed schedule.
Primary supervisors responsibilities
- Commits to supervising the doctoral students research and doctoral education throughout all stages
- Respects the agreed timetables and deadlines
- Gives feedback regularly and within a reasonable amount of time
- Familiarizes the doctoral student with academic work and practices related to scientific qualifications
(e.g. publishing, conferences, researcher mobility, ethical principles)
- Ensures that the roles and responsibilities between the primary supervisor, second supervisor and supervisory group are
clearly defined * (please specify below)
- Assists the doctoral student in getting funding: gives information on funding opportunities and writes references when needed
- Assesses (together with the supervisory group) whether the doctoral thesis manuscript is ready for evaluation
