Multi-Camera Production Roles


You will be producing 3-4 interviews during your chat show. For each interview state who will be doing
which role. You must do EVERY role once during the show.

TASK 1: Define each of the following roles
Interviewer
Describe their job Reference your research
The role of the interviewer is to act as a friendly and polite character in order to ask a series of
questions. They must do background research in order to know the subject they will be
discussing and to build a rapport with the interviewee in order to get the answers.

Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
The interviewee normally works on the studio floor in front of the cameras.

What skills do they need to do their job well?


They need to be a confident and friendly person in order to not feel nervous when interviewing
someone/ They must be able to do research as well in order to ask questions about the topic
being discussed.

Director
Describe their job - Reference your research
The role of the director is to direct everyone who is part of the production especially the actors
and the cameramen. Their role is to guide the actors and the technical production team to
correctly carry out what they want. The director is involved in the majority of aspects in the
production including production design, the overall filmmaking and casting of characters.

Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
The director works on the studio floor.

What skills do they need to do their job well?


The director needs to have good leadership skills in order to be confident enough to guide the
team. A director must also have patience and be a persistent person as well as being a
visually creative individual who can communicate well with others.

Camera Person
Describe their job - Reference your research
The camera person is clearly to control and operate the camera professionally. They work
alongside the cast members and director in order to carry out how the director wants the
overall production to look. This also includes being responsible for composing the framing of
the video and shooting angles.

Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
The camera person usually if not always works in on the studio floor.

What skills do they need to do their job well?


The camera person must be able to communicate with other members of the team. They
themselves must also be a creative person in which they can carefully frame each shot as well
as being able to use the correct equipment in order to film the production.

Sound Mixing

According to Creative skillset, the role of the sound mixer is to make sure dialogue recorded during
filming is clear, advising on retakes and working with the boom operator.

The sound mixer works in the control room.

What skills do they need to do their job well?


The sound mixer must have good communication skills in order to work with the cast in crew in case
of retakes. They must also be a good problem solver in which they have to able to deal with coming
up with solutions to problems whilst under pressure.

Vision Mixing
Describe their job - Reference your research
The vision mixer takes on a difficult role of editing programmes that are broadcasting live. This
includes using techniques such as wipes, frame manipulation, cuts and more.

Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
The vision mixer works in the control room.

What skills do they need to do their job well?


Similar to a sound mixer, a vision mixer must be able to work under pressure as it is vital that they
dont make any mistakes due to the programme being broadcasted live. They should already be
skilled in IT at an advanced level, be able to multitask, have a high vision including colour. They
obviously must have knowledge and experience with vision mixing equipment. Creative skillset also
notes that a vision mixer must have the ability to read a musical score.

Graphics Generator
Describe their job - Reference your research
The role of the graphics generator is to simply create overlays that make reference to parts of the
interview. This helps to give the audience a visual look of certain topics within the interview as well
as jogging their memories. This could include photographs of the interviewee, album covers, film
posters etc.

A graphics generator works in the control room.

What skills do they need to do their job well?


A graphics generator must be able to have the ability to multitask. This is due to them not only
having to the listen to the interview, but also having to insert the overlays during the interview which
a lot of people would struggle with. They must also have patience for this as well as having the
knowledge and experience of being a graphics generator.

Lighting Desk
Describe their job - Reference your research
The lighting desk job requires an individual to control and operate lighting equipment. This job is
also known as being a lighting technician. This job does not necessarily have to be done in the
studio, this job can also be carried out on location. This job role is very important to production
companies as the lighting is a key element in creating a certain mood or atmosphere that the
director wants the audience to feel.

Which part of the studio do they work in? (ie control room, studio floor)
The lighting technician can work in the control room as well as on the studio floor.

What skills do they need to do their job well?


The lighting operator must excel in the technical and creative aspects of production. They must be
physically capable to lift heavy lighting equipment and place them in the right position.

Floor Manager
Describe their job - Reference your research
The role of the floor manager is to deem if equipment, props and sets are safe enough to be used
during production as well as making sure all of the elements are in the right places. As well as these
duties, the floor manager must also keep guests happy.

The floor manager can work in the control room as well as operating on the studio floor.

What skills do they need to do their job well?


A floor manager must have good communication skills due to them attending to a variety of peoples
needs. They must be a friendly and approachable person who must be confident in themselves and
the team so they can decide whether the overall set can be used.

Draw a plan of your set. Mark on the position of lights, cameras, props and Green-screen
backgrounds.
Add in photographs of your final set, including props etc.

a) The presenter introducing the show
b) Interviews (the lighting may be different for different interviews)
c) The end of the show
