Welcome Back!
CYBER BULLYING

When most parents are confronted with cyber bullying many of them just ignore it because they
dont quite understand what it is or how they can help their child. Cyber bulling is a form of
bullying that takes place through electronic forms of communication. Some examples of cyber
bullying are mean text messages, rumors posted on social networking sites, and embarrassing
pictures or videos.
Parents can work with their children to prevent cyber bullying. There are three main ways a parent
can do this:
1. Be aware of what your child is doing online.
2. Establish rules with your children for technology.
3. Get to know the forms of technology or the sites your child uses.
Lastly, if your child is getting cyber bullied make sure to report it immediately. Also keep
evidence of cyberbullying. Record the dates, times, and descriptions of instances when
cyberbullying has occurred. Save and print screenshots, emails, and text messages. Use this
evidence to report cyberbullying to web and cell phone service providers.

DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP
Working with the school to teach your children about digital citizenship is one of the best ways to
protect your child while they are online. Digital citizenship refers to the overall experience of
navigating the online world. Good citizenship on the internet encompasses everything from taking
safety precautions to practicing proper social etiquette.

INSIDE THIS ISSUE:

Nine elements of digital citizenship:

TESTING STUDENT PROGRESS

One of the tools I plan to use in the
classroom to continually check to
make sure the students understand the
material is a tool named Quizalize.
With Quizalize I am able to quickly
find out how many students are
getting the concept I'm teaching. Its a
pain free way as it cant hurt against
them. The students love the visual
response. They also enjoy the new
team feature were I can split the room
into two teams and the students
compete against each other. With the
live dashboard I am able to quickly
see who needs help and who is not

getting the concept at all. I can

measure all of the students strengths
and weaknesses in various topics all at
once. Another interesting feature
available that can be used shows how
many students answered a particular
answer. This is a great tool because I
can look at this and have all the
students be anonymous. This tool can
be used in the classroom or I can send
the students home with a link to
complete a quiz for homework.

WHAT IS COPYRIGHT?
Copyright is a form of legal protection
automatically provided to the authors of
original works of authorship, including
literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic
works.
Students will be learning this year what
copyright is how to make sure they dont
copyright anything. Our students will also
learn what fair use is and how they can
fairly use items they find on the internet. Copyright will be a hard concept for
kindergarteners to grasp so to help your child learn the material we will be
teaching throughout the year.
To help further, I have provided some links that you and your child can visit to
further education yourselves.

WATCHING WITH WATCHKIN

Watchkin is a technological tool much like YouTube however, it is more
classroom and kid friendly. We will use Watchkin in the classroom to view
YouTube videos. This is a safer site because it takes away all of the videos on
the side bar that could be inappropriate and it gets rid of the videos at the end
of the clip that could be inappropriate. By removing the clutter of ads and potentially offensive or obscene videos and comments, Watchkin allows teachers
and students to watch videos with a distraction free and safe environment. Another component of Watchkin is that you can share videos from the Watchkin
site and it will send the recipient a clean safe version of the video. Watchkin is
a great tool to use to watch only the video assigned since Watchkin takes away
all the other distractions. Students will be able to complete their assignments
faster and safer. Watchkin also allows you to install an auto redirect so that if
you child tries to open a video in YouTube it will send them to the Watchkin
website to view the video there.
Watchkin also has a smart filtering option: W atchkin Smart Mode filters
search results a little differently than YouTube, aiming to be the most useful
for a family audience, and is the default setting. It is more selective than
YouTube, but at the same time it has less over-blocking problems (blocking
videos that don't need to be blocked for any reason). It has 2 components: 1)
Our own keyword-based filtering, and 2) User input, which allows users to
flag videos as being inappropriate. The user input is "crowdsourced", however,
so a single person can't decide a video's fate.

CLASS DOJO?
Class Dojo is tool that will be used in our
classroom to keep track of behavior . The
way it works is the entire class will be put
into the system. I will be able to give and
take away points when needed. At the end
of the week your child may spent his or
her points to do or get various things.
There is an option for you to sign up as
well to be able to view your child's progress throughout the day via your
smartphone. Your child can gain points
for things like doing their homework, sitting quietly, doing their classwork and

participating. They may also lose points

for things like talking out of turn, getting
out of their seat without asking and not
doing their classwork. I have used this tool
in the past and believe it is a great motivator for student to behave. They also love
the little monsters. I hope that
you will work
along side me to
help your child
to earn points.

HOW IS MY CHILD BEHAVING IN THE CLASSRROM?

Another great tool that will be used in our classroom this year is called class
charts. This website allows me to have a profile for each student that I can use
to track their progress in the classroom and base their seating arraignment on
that. Class charts is a behavior management software that I will use to improve behavior and recognize achievement. I plan to involve both you and
your child in this program so we can track progress together. Class charts is a
quick way for me to learn about your child and their style of learning. I am
able to add key student data to the seating plans so that I am immediately
aware of their abilities, targets and needs. Class Charts helps promote positive
character traits and encourages students in the right direction.
