SOL: The student will
a) describe mean, median, and mode as measures of center;
b) describe mean as fair share;
c) find the mean, median, mode, and range of a set of data; and
d) describe the range of a set of data as a measure of variation.

Content Outline:
I. A measure of center is a value at the center or middle of a data set. Mean, median, and mode
are measures of center.
II. The mean, median, and mode are three of the various ways that data can be analyzed.
III. Mean represents a fair share concept of the data. Dividing the data constitutes a fair share.
This is done by equally dividing the data points. This should be demonstrated visually and
with manipulatives. The arithmetic way is to add all of the data points then divide by the
number of data points to determine the average or mean.
IV. The median is the piece of data that lies in the middle of the set of data arranged in order.
V. The mode is the piece of data that occurs most frequently in the data set. There may be one,
more than one, or no mode in a data set. Students should order the data from least to greatest
so they can better find the mode.
VI. The range is the spread of a set of data. The range of a set of data is the difference between
the greatest and least values in the data set. It is determined by subtracting the least number
in the data set from the greatest number in the data set.

Rationale:
The purpose of teaching this lesson is to help students understand the concepts of measures of
center, and measures of variation. These are both concepts that can be very useful in real life
application. One of the most useful is mean or average. Many jobs require you to be able to find
the average for a set of data, as well as the median.

Objective(s):
The student will describe mean, median, and mode as measures of center.
The student will describe mean as fair share.
The student will describe range as a measure of variation.
The student will solve for mean, median, mode, and range when given a set of values.
Lesson Opening:
I will introduce students to these new concepts by having them all write their ages on sticky
notes. I will collect these and stick them on the board. I will work through how to find the mean,
median, mode, and range of the students ages on the board.
Instructional Strategies/Processes:
Fact fluency. (10 mins.)
Interactive notebook pages: I will go over the notebook pages with the students using the
document reader. We will answer questions together as a class, and students will glue the pages
into their notebooks. (25 mins.)
I will then pass out blank paper to each student. I will show them how to make a flip booklet for
the four concepts we are learning. On each part, we will write a definition and an example. This
will be something students can refer to when doing the skill sheet. (20 mins.)

I will hand out a skill sheet for students. They will be given three options 1) work on the skill
sheet alone at their desk 2) work on the skill sheet at the table with me or 3) work on IXL W.1,
W.2, and W.3 which contains the same skills. (40 mins.)
When students have completed the skills sheet, we will begin pre testing for place value, which
we will begin next week.
Products:
Flip booklet, skills sheet, IXL

Assessment:
My assessment will be the skills sheet. I will also use the pre test as an assessment of where to
start with place value.
Closure:
I will have students quiz each other using the flip booklet to make sure they understand the
vocabulary of the concepts.
Homework: none
Differentiation:
I will make the skills sheet larger for a student who has a visual disability. I will also assist
students in a small group setting who are having problems with the concepts.
Materials/Equipment:

INB pages, document reader, flip booklets, skills sheet, laptops
