On this Second Sunday of Advent, we remember St

Nicholas. It was this Saint and his acts of kindness that
started the tradition of Saint Nicholas or popularly known
as Santa Claus. His Feast is on December 6.
We also remember this week Saint Juan Diego the Saint
from Mexico and the one blessed by Our Lady of
Guadalupe. His Feast is on December 9.
We also recall to our minds the Feast of Our Blessed
Mother known as the Immaculate Conception on 12/8/15.
Our Scripture Readings this week-end want us to rejoice,
to be merciful and just, just as our Heavenly Father is
Just and Merciful. The Lord has done great things for us;
therefore, we need to be joyful and full of hope. Saint
Paul tells us to pray always with joy. Joy is part and
parcel of the life of a Christian. Our joy should be
grounded on our Faith, that whatever the tragedies we
hear and talk about, whatever the failures and injustices
in the world, we know that our Father in Heaven will bring
mankind to a successful embrace of His Joy, Peace,
Hope and Love, at the end of the world.
In the Gospel, we hear once again the voice of Saint
John the Baptist, exhorting us to prepare the way of the
Lord. Are we joyful? Do we practise Justice and Mercy?
Then we are truly on the right path and preparing well for
the coming of the Lord. If not, let us heed his voice and
by making a good confession prepare ourselves for the
celebration of the Messiah, with Joy, Mercy and Justice
in our thoughts and actions. Have a great week-end.

Saint Juan Diego

1474-1548
Feast Day December 9
Born Cuauhtlatohuac (The eagle who
speaks), Juan Diegos name is forever
linked with Our Lady of Guadalupe
because it was to him that she first
appeared at Tepeyac hill on December 9,
1531. On Dec. 12, Juan returned to
Tepeyac; Mary told him to pick flowers
blooming atop the hill and put them in his
cloak to take to the bishop. When Juan
opened the cloak, the flowers fell out and
the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe
adorned his garment. This miraculous
image is preserved in the famous basilica
in Mexico City. Saint Juan is revered as a
holy,
unselfish
and
compassionate
catechist who taught by word and
especially by example.

While we're shopping for

gifts, decorating, and sending Christmas cards, what
are we doing to make ChristChristmas a new rebirth of
Christ for our daily lives?
On Tuesday (December 8th),
the Jubilee Year of Mercy
begins. The Holy Spirit wants
to make our hearts fertile
with God's mercy, filling us
with a growing awareness of
how merciful God is to us
when we humbly admit our
tendencies to sin. As we
grow in holiness this Advent,
Jesus will be reborn in us as
the Savior of the world, giving his mercy to others
through us.

In our responsorial Psalm

today, we proclaim: "The
Lord has done great things
Friday December 11
for us; we are filled with joy!"
Isaiah 48:17-19
Do you actually feel joyful
Ps 1:1-4,6
when you mouth these
Matt 11:16-19
words? It takes faith to experience joy in the midst of
Saturday December 12
hardships. Faith grows from
Our Lady of Guadalupe
knowing that the Lord does
Zechariah 2:14-17 or
great things for us because
Rev 11:19a;12:1-6a,10ab
of his mercy -- not because
Judith (15:9d) 13:18-19
Luke 1:26-38 or
we have earned it, as we'll
Luke 1:39-47
never be good enough. Repenting from our sins opens
us to become aware of this mercy.

from a close relationship

with
Christ? What penances will help
"make straight" my path?
What depressing or discouraging
valley of hardship needs to get filled
with the joy of the Lord? If it seems
hopeless, what will I do to let Jesus
take charge of it? What mountain of
debt or difficult obstacle needs to be
made low by having faith in the
Lord's digging tools?
What's twisted and warped in my
thinking, like a road that winds
through a jungle of confusion? I
pray, Holy Spirit, that you will lead
me straight to holiness! What's
rough about me? What's edgy and
sharp and rubs others the wrong
way? Lord Jesus, smooth me like a
diamond polisher.
Throughout Advent and the Year of
Mercy, let us examine the ways in
which we still need to see the salvation of God. Let us make a plan of
action to be holier and happier at the
end of the Jubilee Year than we are
today!

Reflect & Discuss:

1. Which of the above questions
stand out most for you?
2. What will you do with this to prepare the way of the Lord so that
your faith grows?

Therefore, Saint John the Baptizer is proclaiming to us

today: "Prepare the way of the Lord!"

3. Name a tradition you grew up

with that prepared you for
Christmas. How did this affect
your spiritual growth?

Now is the time to ask: What preparations do I need to

make? What am I doing to straighten out the messes
in my life, the areas of sin that continually distract me

4. What's your favorite way of preparing for the holy celebration of

Christmas? Why?
