Government Views on

Climate Change

By: Climate Change policy group

Separation of
Powers
The division of the powers to make, execute, and judge the law among the three branches
of American Government. by Gitelson
Congress is divided up by the House of Representatives and the Senate
The majority of the senate is Republicans ( 54 republicans and 44 democrats )
Mitch McConnell is a the majority leader
The House of Representatives is majority Republicans as well
Republicans hold 246 seats
Democrats hold 144 seats
The Democratic party is more for climate change, but it is hard for them to make an impact
because Republicans dominate

Political
Socialization

The ideals of shared values between a group or community that

influence a person while growing up.
U.S Midwest: for coal burning fossil fuel factories.
U.S Coast: more liberal views. For climate change because they
have more resources to make a difference. (wave energy: buoys in
the ocean that create kinetic energy when waves pass through.)

Levels of Government
San Franciscos plan
trying to expand clean energy
Chicos plan
trying to reduce the carbon footprint
Californias Plan
trying to adapt & passed the the California Global Warming Solutions
Act of 2006
U.S plan
limit carbon emissions from power plants by 2% each year by 2025

President Obamas Aggressive Climate

Change Agenda
By 2016 President Obama wants to enforce a bill that
represents energy saving because of the harsh
effects of climate change.
By enforcing this bill it will drastically reduce the
amount of greenhouse gas emissions that are
produced.
Republicans will not agree with this bill but the
Democrats are hoping that their push to enforce
this law will help
Mr. Obama will meet with President Xi Jinping of China
at the White House, and they are expected to
discuss their joint efforts to cut emissions

Democratic View
Hope that the bill will demonstrate a new unity
party on energy and climate change

for the

Democrats say they believe that forcefully pushing for climate change policies could help
them win control of the Senate in 2016
Senator Chuck Schumer, Democrat of New York, states, This is the kind of thing Id
embrace.
Our message is that you can have clean energy and create jobs in a responsible
way, and its going to unite our caucus
Senate Democrats hope to indicate to world leaders that despite Republican opposition to
the plan, they stand ready to back Mr. Obamas policies
Idea is to make it more expensive to burn fossil fuels and to drive the market toward
energy such as wind and solar

Republican View
Believe that bill has no chance of passage in the Republicancontrolled Congress
Mitch McConnell, Republican of Kentucky, wants to stop this climate
change bill to be enforced
has sought to undercut Obamas efforts to enact tough new regulations on
greenhouse gas pollution

Statements
Donald Trump tweeted, a total, and very expensive, hoax!
Ben Carson says, I know there are a lot of people who say overwhelming science,
but then when you ask them to show the overwhelming science, they never can
show it...There is no overwhelming science that the things that are going on are
man-caused and not naturally caused...Give me a break.

What we think
We believe that this bill should be enforced
climate change is impacting our world more
and more everyday, and we need to take
action before it is too late to make a difference

Discussion Questions
Why do you think Republicans are so stubborn in enforcing Obamas
Aggressive Climate Change Agenda?
How successful do you think the plan will be?
