Unit Lesson Plan for Spanish II

Introduction:
For this unit I plan to use three lessons in order to teach students how to
communicate their likes and dislikes in Spanish. The lessons will build
upon each other and provide students with both comprehensible input
and practice opportunities to better their listening, writing, and oral
skills.

Standards:
1FL-E5. Identify emotions and feelings from selected reading material
2FL-E1. Express and react to a variety of feelings
2FL-F4. State opinions about objects, people and events present in their
everyday lives.
2FL-F5. Acquire goods or information through interaction
2FL-E3. Support opinions with factual information.
2FL-P3. Compare and contrast ideas, people, places and things

Lesson 1
Standards:
2FL-E1. Express and react to a variety of feelings.
2FL-F4. State opinions about objects, people and events present in their
everyday lives.
Goal 1: Students will become familiar with expressions of preferences
and the verb gustar.
Objective 1: Students will be able to identify new vocabulary about
favorite pastimes and cognates while watching a video.

Criteria 1: Students will write the activities that the students from the
video like and dislike to do while listening to them describe their
favorite and least favorite activities.
They will also recognize the uses and ways to conjugate the verb
gustar and similar verbs.

In order to activate background knowledge the teacher will first ask the
students to tell the class the types of activities they like to do when they
arent in school. While the students are answering with the activities
they like to do the teacher will write them on the board. Next, the
teacher will ask the students the type of activities they dislike to do. The
teacher will also write the answers of the students about their dislikes on
the board. After the students have discussed their likes and dislikes the

teacher will ask the students what they think children their age in
Hispanic countries like and dislike doing, and write them on the board.
The teacher will then introduce new vocabulary by having the students
watch the video. The video shows five students from different Spanish
speaking countries who explain what they like to do and what they
dislike. Students will re watch the video a second time to write down all
of the cognates they hear in the video that the students in the video use
to describe their likes and dislikes.
The teacher will then use vocabulary and sentences from the video in
order to explain the structure of the verb gustar. The students will take
notes of the structure used in the video as explained by the teacher.
Finally, the teacher will have the students prepare a list of six of their
favorite activities they like to do on the weekends. They will also have to
prepare a list of 6 of their least favorite activities they do not like to do
on the weekends. If the students do not finish their lists during class they
will have to finish this activity at home and bring it to class the
following day.

Outcomes: Students will have a list of twelve sentences using the

vocabulary learned and the verb gustar.

Lesson 2
Standards:
2FL-E1. Express and react to a variety of feelings
1FL-E5. Identify emotions and feelings from selected reading material
2FL-P3. Compare and contrast ideas, people, places and things
Goal 2: Students will better their reading and oral skills by expressing
and discussing likes and dislikes using the previously learned grammar
structures that they saw in context.
Objective 2: Students will be able to ask and answer questions about
their likes and dislikes. Students will also be able to read and write about
the activities that they would like and dislike to do based upon two travel
brochures written in Spanish that will be given to them.
Criteria 2: Students will discuss in class their likes and dislikes based
on objects the teacher has brought in and arranged at the front of the
class. (A basketball, football, paint set, dvd, etc.)
Students will then be divided into groups of three and given a travel
brochure in Spanish which they will study. The students will then make
a list of all of the things they could do at the given destination and what
they would like and dislike there.
**See pdf of travel brouchure**
Outcomes: Students will correctly speak about their likes and dislikes
and correctly use vocabulary in their vocal answers. Students will turn in
their lists of travel likes and dislikes.

Lesson 3
Standards:
2FL-E3. Support opinions with factual information.
2FL-P3. Compare and contrast ideas, people, places and things.
Goal 3: Students will solidify their knowledge of the unit vocabulary
and of the structure of the verb gustar and its uses to express likes and
dislikes.
Objective 3: Students will be able to recall the unit vocabulary by
taking a short quiz. Also, students will demonstrate mastery of the
grammar structure by creating their own travel brochures with given
materials.
Criteria 3: Students will complete a quiz based on the vocabulary of
the unit. Students will then use the remainder of the period to create
their own travel brochures using the materials provided: magazines,
scissors, glue sticks, construction paper. The students will then present
their brochure in front the class in a brief two minute presentation in
Spanish.
Outcomes: Evidence of mastery will be had in the vocabulary quiz, and
mastery of the grammar structure of the unit will be evident in the
individual projects made by the students.
