UNIT-V (CORRELATION & REGRESSION , QUEUEING

THEORY)
1) i)Distinguish between correlation and regression. ii)Distinguish between positive and
negative correlations.
2)Write down the properties of regression coefficients.
3) Explain briefly the main characteristics of a queuing system.
4) From the following data, find (i) the two regression equations (ii) the coefficient of
correlation between the marks in economics and statistics (iii) the most likely marks in
statistics when marks in economics are 30.

And the correlation coefficient between X and Y is 0.8.
7) The regression equations of two variables X and Y are as follows.
3X +2Y-26=0 and 6X+Y-31=0 then find (i) the means of X and Y (ii) the regression
coefficients (iii) the coefficient of correlation between X and Y.
8) a. For 10 observations on price (x) and supply (y) the following data were obtained in
appropriate units: X=130, Y=220, X2=2288, Y2=5506, XY=3467. Obtain the line of
regression of Y on X and estimate the supply when the price is 16 units.

9) In a telephone exchange the arrival of calls follow Poisson distribution with an average of
8 minutes between two consecutive calls. The length of a call is 4 minutes. Determine (i) the
probability that the arriving at the booth will have to wait. (ii) the average queue length that
forms from time to time.
10) Customers arrive at the first class ticket counter of a theatre at a rate of 12 per hour.
There is one clerk serving the customers at the rate of 30 per hour. The arrivals are Poisson
in nature and service time follows exponential distribution, then finds i) Probability that the
counter is busy. ii) Probability that there are more than two customers at the counter ii)
Probability that there is no customer waiting to be served iv) Probability that a customer is
being served and nobody is waiting. v) Average queue length vi) Average waiting time of the
system.
