Students will be able to identify digital security problems by polling classmates and graphing
their results.
Standards:
CCSS: RI.5.7: Draw on information from multiple print or digital sources,
demonstrating
the ability to locate an answer to a question quickly or to solve a problem efficiently.
CCSS: W.6.1.b: Support claim(s) with clear reasons and relevant evidence, using
credible sources and demonstrating an understanding of the topic or text.
Materials needed:
Computer or device, Butcher paper, markers, pen, and paper.
Pre-Assessment:
1. The teacher will talk about the importance of:
a. having a good password,
b. an anti-virus software,
c. sharing personal information,
d. awareness of lies and scams online
e. digital ethics and security
2. The teacher will play a video (Becoming an online Sleuth).
Lesson Activity:
1. . The teacher will then separate the students in groups of four.
2 . Each group will use their Chromebooks to research Digital Security and get some
background knowledge of what kind of scams can happen online.
3 . Each group will then use at least the following 4 questions to survey two other groups in
class:
a. Have you ever told a lie online?
b. Have you ever met up with anyone in person that you met online?
c. Do you have your personal information online such as a social
media website? i.e. full name, address, birthday, etc.
d. Do you have an antivirus software setup on your laptop or
computer?
4. Once the survey is complete, each group will create a bar graph of their findings. Labeling
the x-axis Questions and the y-axis #number of students.
5. After students are done with their graph, each group will take 2 mins to present their
graph and findings. Also, they will present what one interesting fact did they find about
online scams and what one thing could they do to become an Online Sleuth.
Summative Assessment:
Presentation of poster will be graded by the following Rubric:
