Drew Bowman of the Pittsburg PostGazette Arnold Spirit a Native American citizen of Washington State is leading for the congressional race. Nearing the election of 2020 according to the polling from Mercyhurst Universitys Center for Applied Politics. Spirit is being praised for his battles for equality and fair treatment in Washington and the plan to bring this system of fair treatment to the rest of the nation. If Spirit is elected he will be the first Native American Congressman in the United States. Mr. Spirit mention in the last political debate his plan to take action for the Native American people and help to break the cycle that the natives experience in this country. Spirit conveyed I lived it. I know how it is on the reservations and how poverty and alcoholism are an ongoing cycle that is a real struggle for Natives to get out of. I was lucky enough to have someone guide me in the right direction. Some challenge Spirit on this idea of mistreatments by the U.S. government implemented onto
reservations, but the senator holds strong
to his guns and doesnt let the more experienced candidates intimidate him. He brings hard facts and personal experiences to show the system that negatively affects so many and prevents change within the Native Americans and other minority groups. Spirit brought up the recent mass changes within the African American communities in the U.S. stating Many denied that the system was flawed leading to a system of poverty and drug abuse among the African Americans in this country for decades and look at us now. We have made huge steps in equality and fixing these cycles. The people are looking for a voice and many feel they have found one. A man that will truly speak for the people and work to put all in a position that creates true opportunity. I sat down with Mr. Spirit after the debate last night and we talked about his journey to where he is today. I asked him to tell me what this has been like for him. Senator Spirit replied I never could have imagined this being my reality. I was a poor Indian boy living on the Spokane reservation with a loving mother and an alcoholic father. Dont get me wrong I was lucky, because my father may have been an alcoholic, but he did love me. I wouldnt be here without my math teacher Mr. P from high school. He instilled in me that I could be something. I realized after getting into a world off the reservation how stuck the Natives on the reservation really are. I think I always knew, but I was enlightened when I had a world to compare the reservation world to. When I became senator I realized Natives are not the only ones that are victims of the cycle of poverty. I decided to run for congressman, because I want to help break these cycles; However, I will work to break the cycles for everyone. I will not focus on all groups and forget Native Americans as so many have. Talking with Spirit was eye opening and empowering. He is ready to take charge on this election and do all he can to become a
congressman. The people seem to be
behind the movement and are excited for the future.
