Relations and Functions Unit Plan

Established Goals:
Develop algebraic and graphical reasoning through the study of relations

Understandings:
Students will understand that
relationships can be interpreted and
explained in a variety of ways.
relations can have limitations.
all relations have a cause and effect.

Essential Questions:

Students will know

What would be the best way to represent a

particular relationship? Why?
Where else do we see dependent and
independent relationships?
When have you encountered limitations?
What are the limits of mathematical
representation?
What are the advantages of function notation?

Students will be able to do

1. Interpret and explain the relationships among

data, graphs and situations.
2. Demonstrate and understanding of relations and
functions.
3. Describe and represent linear relations, using:
words, ordered pairs, table of values, graphs and
equations.

Brief Description
The test will be multiple choice, numerical
response, short and long answer. The test will
serve as a summative assessment of what the
students know. They will also be used to study
from at the end of the year for the final. The
test will be 18 MC and 3 written response.
Putting the Fun in Functions is a performance
task that students will complete at the end of
the unit. Students will conduct an experiment
and collect the data from it. They will analyze
different parts of the data and relate it to
everything that we learn in the unit.
There will be two quizzes throughout the unit.
There will be one quiz a week, but students will
not know when these quizzes are to take place.
The quizzes will always be short and long
answer so that I can give descriptive and
continuous feedback to them within a day.
There will be one assignment throughout this
unit. Students will complete the assignment
before they do the quiz. I will give them
formative feedback and we will go through the
questions that students struggled with as a
class. If students still need extra help they can
come see me during flex time.
I will be doing formative assessment on a daily
basis to make sure the class is keeping up and I
will adjust my pace as necessary. The formative
assessment will be asking questions,
homework checks, partner work, mini
whiteboards and sentio clickers.
Throughout the semester students will be
completing a math portfolio. For this unit,
students must show evidence towards each
SLO as well as make weekly reflections on their
strengths and weaknesses, and progress
towards their math goal.
