Overview
This lesson focuses on the significance of The Star-Spangled Banner, and why it was chosen as our National
Anthem, as well as what it means to be patriotic. At the end of the lesson, students will be able to recite The
Star-Spangled Banner, as well as explain its origin, the story the song tells, and construct their own definition of
patriotism. The students will record themselves re-enacting the scene (in groups) on an iPad, in addition to
creating and presenting a PowerPoint (individually) about the event and what patriotism means to them.
Essential Questions
Why do we sing The Star-Spangled Banner? What event inspired the writing of this important poem that
became a song? Why has this song been chosen as our National Anthem? What else would you like to learn
about the events that took place during this time? Students will have read the appropriate section, in the textbook
about the Revolutionary War.
Assessment
1.) Students will re-enact the scene in groups (2-United States groups and 2- British Empire groups), and record
the re-enactments on an iPad. The whole class will watch the videos. 2.) Students will create their own
PowerPoint about what they believe patriotism is, and describe the event upon which the song is based. 3.)
Students will recite The Star-Spangled Banner. All products will be graded by a rubric.

Resources
1.) Students will use the internet to view a brief video on YouTube, as well as use Google to conduct research
about the song. Students will need to have basic computer skills for this assignment. 2.) Students will use
PowerPoint to explain what patriotism means and what they learned about the war we have studied. 3.) Students
will read or have read to them select articles and short stories about the events that took place. 4.) Students will
be given a rubric to clarify expectations of assignments.
Instructional Plan
Preparation
Students will be asked a series of questions prior to engaging in the assignment. I will make use of a K-W-L chart
for this assignment. Students will then watch a brief video via YouTube to give them a foundation of information,
in addition to reading the relevant chapter in the provided text. Students will also read articles and handouts that I
will provide. Some students may not know about the song, while others may not know how to use PowerPoint.
Some students may be shy and reluctant to participate in a re-enactment.
Management
Students will work mostly in the classroom, in groups. They will also work independently on the PowerPoint in the
computer lab. At home, students will brainstorm ideas for their PowerPoint presentations, and write down on
paper what they might want to include in the individual PowerPoint.

Instruction and Activities

I will use a K-W-L chart to base my level of instruction. I will provide explicit instructions, including how to do a
PowerPoint presentation, give a rubric outlining grading criteria, and I will show them an example PowerPoint. I
will also show them a previous groups video to serve as a guide. I will serve as a guide or facilitator of learning.
Students will work both independently and collaboratively in assigned groups. Students will produce 2 works
samples: 1 video done collaboratively and 1 PowerPoint done individually.

Differentiation
I will group students according to their needs and provide more explicit instruction, on a student by student basis.
Students will have a choice of which side they will be on for the video. Students will read and do research
independently, while I answer any questions, prior to engaging in group activities. I will monitor group interactions
and encourage collaboration. Students will do their PowerPoint independently based on their own understanding.
Closure and Reflection
Students will provide a reflection of what they have learned when they present their PowerPoint depicting what
patriotism means to them and what they have learned about the event. In the L column of the K-W-L chart, we will
discover the effectiveness of the lesson. I will reflect upon the effectiveness of the lesson and differentiate my next
lesson accordingly. Students will be asked if they enjoyed doing this type of lesson, and I will base future lessons
styles off of these findings. As a class, we will discuss the lesson and talk about what each student liked and
disliked and why. Their responses and my judgment will determine what we would have done differently.
