USES OF TO

1) Para expresar finalidad de una accin


(=in order to, so as to, so that):
* I study hard to pass the Bachillerato and be
able to go to university.
*The tongue is a muscle in the mouth (that is)
used to talk and taste.
(= The tongue is a muscle for talking and
tasting.) (Ms comn para definir uso de
objetos)

2) Preposicin
De tiempo (= hasta)

p.m.
De direccin: Con un verbo de movimiento +
to / into (=a / hacia). To go, walk, run into =
entrar, entrar caminando, entrar corriendo).
I go to school by foot. (Voy al colegio a pi.)
We went into the classroom a little late. (Entramos
en el aula un poco tarde.)
The dog ran into the room. El perro entr corriendo
en la habitacin.

CD + to CI (= a + CI)
He gave a kiss to Mary (to her) on her cheek.
(Le di un beso a Mary en la mejilla.)
Remember: Not to use to if the CI goes right
after the verb:
He gave Mary a kiss.
I helped my friend with his/her homework.
He told me that he would be late. = Me dijo
que vendra tarde.
Excepcin: He said to me that he would be
late. = Me dijo que vendra tarde.

To+ v-ing
Despus de ciertos verbos y expresiones
I am looking forward to hearing from you.
I never get used to getting up so early.
Im not used to studying in the evening.

They prefer to go home.

homework.

States. / My dad used to play marbles as a child.

I love to lay in the sun. (Tb. I love playing in the

sun.)

Con la expression: It is (was/were) + adj +


(for + nombre / pronombre objeto) + to +
infinitivo

ingls se unen las dos actividades con and:
I need to go and buy some clothing. (Necesito ir
a comprar ropa.)
Im going to the library and study. (Voy a ir a la
biblioteca a estudiar.)
Ir a hacer una actividad deportiva.
I usually go running in the evening. Usualmente
voy a correr por las tardes.
5. Imperativo indirecto
My mom wants me to go back home early.
My mom wants me not to go back home late.
