Task 1.12 NME Videos

Michael Jackson Billie Jean
There are several different genres which are associated with this music video,
they include dance-pop, post-disco, rhythm and blues and funk. The style of the
video is performance based, Michael Jackson performs to a camera, I can see
this because it is just him dancing to a camera, e.g. when he is dancing on the
tiles and they light up, this is a very iconic and famous piece of performing by
Michael Jackson. The genre and the style of the music video relates to the
meaning of the song, the song represents how he has a lover in his life, the
dance-pop genre represents this. The cinematography, sound, editing and mise
en scene used in the video are very interesting and relate to the genre of the
song. The cinematography includes an establishing shot, wide shots, aerial shots
and low angles, all of these camera techniques are used in the video to create
tension and to make it more interesting for the viewer. The video includes
several different sound effects such as dialogue, parallel sound and a theme
tune, all of these techniques are put into the video to create tension and to
ensure the video is not boring for the viewer. Long
takes and wipes were all used as part of the editing
process which took place within the video, these
worked well as it made the video more interesting as it
was not just one long take. The mise-en-scene is all of
the elements placed in front of the camera to be
photographed, the settings and props, lighting,
costume, make-up and figure behaviour. The props used
in video included an old house and a dance floor
disguised as a tiled floor; this created a sense of
excitement when watching the video which resulted in the video becoming more
interesting for the viewer. The meaning behind the video is how Michael Jackson
has a lover who eventually turns out not be his lover, the lyrics supports this
statement, Billie Jean is not my lover, the genre of the video relates to this.
Jay Z Big Pimpin
Jay Z Big Pimpin is one of his most iconic and I feel best songs he has produced,
the genre of the music video is hip-hop and east coast hip-hop. You can tell this
from many things such as the clothes the people are wearing in the video. The
style of the video is known as Narrative as it tells a story throughout the video,
it shows how Jay Z and his friends live there life, e.g. the high life, nice weather,
private yacht, etc. The directors do this to see if any of the audience can relate
to the video, e.g. Jay Z is showing his lifestyle by him being on a private yacht
with lots of alcohol and women around him, this also shows the power he has.
The cinematography, sound effects, editing techniques and mise-en-scene are all
very well thought through and make the video far more interesting than what it
would be without them. The sound used include dialogue, parallel sound and a
theme tune is used throughout the duration of the video, an example of the
parallel sound is when Jay Z is moving his head in rhythm with the music. The

editing techniques used in the video include wipes and long takes, the camera
techniques used include an establishing shot, wide shot, aerial shots and low
angles, these all played there part to ensure the video was interesting for the
viewer. The props that were put in front of the screen include a boat, jewellery
and a beach; this represents what genre it is and what story Jay Z is trying to tell
throughout the music video.
Janelle Monae Cold War
This is a very iconic and famous song within the music industry; the genre of this
song is art rock, I can tell this because of there is a
theme tune used throughout the video. The music video
has a concept style to it; a concept style is a music
video that has a deeper meaning/message that the
producer/artist would like to get over to the audience,
e.g. we can see this in the video when she starts to
cry in the video, this shows how deep the message
she is trying to get across is. The cinematography,
sound, editing and mise-en-scene used in the
video is very simple, yet very effective for the
viewer. An establishing shot was used and that
shot stayed the same throughout the video as
a close up, this creates excitement and
tension through the video. The sound used
includes dialogue, a theme tune throughout
the duration of the video and parallel sound,
e.g. when she started crying in the video, the
sound reflected what I could see on the
screen. I feel that there was only one editing technique used in the video, which
was one long take, I felt this was very powerful as it linked in with the genre and
lyrics of the video. There was know props used in the video, it was just one close
up of the artist who was standing in front of a black background, this represents
the meaning behind the song and the meaning she is trying to get across.
Simian Mobile Disco - Hustler
The genre of this song is electronic, house, tech-house, electro house and disco.
You can hear and see that the video is this genre because of the theme tune
used throughout the video; it was an electronic sound which relates to the genre.
The style is narrative as it tells me (the viewer) a story throughout the duration
of the video, e.g. the lyrics used in the video relate the Hustler, and the artists
are explaining his life through lyrics. The cinematography used included an
establishing shot, close ups and tracking shot. All of these techniques played
there part in making the video more interesting for the viewer, e.g. close ups
create tension within the video. The sound includes the use of dialogue,
contrapuntal sound and ambient sound, the editing techniques used in the video
were very basic, however very effective for me as the viewer, wipes and fades
were the main editing techniques used in the video. The location of the whole

video was the in one room where the actors were sitting down in a circle, in the
background there were props such as lights, chairs and sofas, I found this very
effective when watching the video because they were telling each other a story
when going round in the circle, linking in with the narrative style of the video.

B.O.B Outcast
The genre of this song is drumb n bass and
alternative hip hop, I can tell this from the theme
song/tune used in the background within the song, the
theme tune contains a lot of bass. The style of the
video is a performance base as the artists are
performing in front of a camera; it involves the artists
performing several different dance moves in front of the
camera. Iggy Azaleas song Work was inspired by the chord progression in
B.O.B, they both link in with each other and have the same storyline. The
cinematography used in the video includes an establishing shot, close ups, low
angles and aerial shots were all used to make the video more interesting for the
viewer, e.g. close ups within a music video creates tension when watching it. The
sound techniques include dialogue; parallel sound and a theme tune, which is
played in the background throughout the duration of the song. Many interesting
techniques were used in the video such as long takes, fades and wipes, the
location of the song was in a street and a mainly a bedroom, the props used
includes cars and many extra dancers, all of these props and location used in the
video have a positive effect on the video and results in the video becoming more
interesting for the viewer.
