Taxonomy

Mathematics
1. Number Sense,
Properties, and
Operations

2. Patterns, Functions,
and Algebraic
Structures
3. Analysis, Statistics,
and Probability

In teaching about
counting and
number system, I
take my students
through a Google
Trek I have
created about my
adventure when I
visited Mexico last
year. I ask my
students to keep
track of how many
locations I visited
by making a tally
mark each time I
move to a new
location. At the
end of the
journey, I ask my
students to count
their tally marks
and tell me how
many stops I
made.
2. Design and
develop digital
age learning
experiences and
assessments
a. Design or adapt
relevant learning
experiences that
incorporate digital
tools and
resources to
promote student
learning and
creativity

Remember
At the end of the
presentation, the
students will recall all
of the stops I made on
my journey in order to
count the total
number of locations I
visited in Mexico.

4. Shape, Dimension,
and Geometric
Relationships

In teaching about
geometric shapes, I
as each student to
create a Prezi that
includes photos of
shapes such as
circles, triangles,
and rectangles that
the students
encounter on a daily
basis. I ask my
students to include
at least 4
photographs in their
presentation, and to
draw/photograph 3
more. The
photographs they
use are all primary
sources and assist
in giving the
students a visual
representation of
the shapes. The
students will then
present their Prezis
to the class.
2. Communication
and collaboration
b. Communicate
information and
ideas effectively to
multiple audiences
using a variety of
media and formats

Understand
The students gain a
deeper understanding
of the geometric
shapes by connecting
those shapes to
objects they see every
day. By illustrating the
shapes for their peers,
a greater
understanding for the
shapes is gained.

personal or group
expression

4. Research and
Reasoning

For their final

research
assignment in our
English class, I ask
my students to
prepare an oral
presentation
about their
favorite musical
artist. The
students have
creative control
over the
technology
medium for their
presentation, i.e.

must include at
least 3 primary
sources in their
presentation.

Understand and
Create
The students will not
only demonstrate
their knowledge on
preparing
presentations that
demonstrate effective
communication, but
they will also
demonstrate their
knowledge of primary
sources. Along with
understanding, the
students will also
create their own
research presentation
that demonstrates
their personal
creativity.

Social Studies
1. History

In our discussing of
the Civil Rights

Understand and
Create

Movement, I ask the

students to create a
PowerPoint about an
influential individual
from the movement
(i.e. Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr.,
President Kennedy,
or Cesar Chvez). In
their presentation,
the students are
asked to use 4
primary sources in
order to make their
presentation more
credible and unique.

2. Geography

3. Economics

For our unit test, I

put my students
into groups of 5
and allow each
group to choose
one of the 50
states. After
selecting their
state, the
students will take
me through the
history of the
state by creating
a Google Trek that
includes stops at
at least 5 major
landmarks of that
state.
2. Design and
develop digital
age learning
experiences and
assessments
d. Provide
students with
multiple and
varied formative
and summative
assessments
aligned with
content and
technology
standards, and
use resulting data
to inform learning
and teaching

The students
demonstrate their
knowledge to me of
both primary sources
and the Civil Rights
Movement through
this assignment. By
creating and
organizing their
presentation, they
incorporate all of their
knowledge into one,
cohesive presentation.

Create
The students will use
their knowledge of the
history of their
assigned state, along
with their knowledge
of creating a Google
Trek to build their own
trek.

Science

2. Life Science

3. Earth Systems
Science

In our unit on the

human body and its
different systems, I
ask my students to
find 3 primary
sources that detail
the different parts
of the brain. The
students can bring
in photos they find
online, audio clips
from scientists, or
primary research on
the brain. The
students will then
give a brief
explanation of their
sources in class.
3. Research and
information fluency
c. Evaluate and
select information
sources and digital
tools based on the
appropriateness to
specific tasks
During our unit on
glaciology, I
create a google
trek that takes my
students on a
journey to
Antarctica to visit
some of these
glaciers. Along
with the Google
Trek, I also use
primary sources
to show my
students pictures
of glaciers that
are found in our
world present day.
This also provides
a perfect
opportunity to
discuss the issues
occurring with
global warming

Analyze
The students will
evaluate information
they find and
determine its
effectiveness and
relevance to our unit.
The students will also
organize the
information they
select and present it
in an effective
manner.

Understand
Through my
illustration of the
different glaciers, the
students will gain a
deep understanding
for what a glacier is
and where/how
glaciers are formed,
along with gaining a
global perspective on
the effects of global
warming on the
glaciers.

and climate
change, and its
effects on the
glaciers.
5. Engage in
professional
growth and
leadership
a. Participate in
local and global
learning
communities to
explore creative
applications of
technology to
improve student
learning

Learning Disabilities EEOs

During our
geography unit, I
ask my students to
create a Google Trek
about their dream
vacation in their
favorite country. The
students will pick
three stops they
want to make in
their journey and
give me a brief
explanation about
why they selected
these stops. The
students have full
creative control
over their project
and are given a task
that is able to be
completed by all of
my students. The
students are also
given the
opportunity to work
in groups if they feel
more comfortable
working with a
friend versus
working alone.

During our first

week of class I ask
my students to
create a Google

through their daily
life. The students
are able to include
whatever they
want in their
journey and get
full creative
control over the
assignment. This
allows the
students to share
whatever they
feel to be
appropriate and
important to share
with me and with
their classmates.

Reflection:
I had never used Google Trek, or even heard of it, before this assignment, and I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed
using Trek. I also appreciate the potential that rests within Google Trek, and the possibilities for futures assignments that can
involve Google Trek. I also plan to help my students become very familiar with primary sources because I believe primary sources
to be critical in any learning situation. I was unsure of the assignments I would create in this matrix that related to primary
sources and Google Trek, however, to my surprise, I found myself coming up with many different ideas. I am very excited about

the potential assignments that I have created for my future students through this assignment, and I feel more prepared to
incorporate technology into my teaching.
