Activity Design Plan
Activity Objective
Students will be able to comprehend the historical events of World War II by reviewing
questions of the time period.
Description of Activity
The review the students will be participating in is called Battle Jenga. The teacher will
place a Jenga tower on a table in the front of the class. The Jenga tower consists of 53 blocks.
Each Jenga block has a number on it that coincides with a question that will be asked by the
teacher to the student. The students will be divided into two teams with different individuals
coming to the front of the classroom when it is their teams turn. The team with the most points at
the end of the game wins.
Motivation
The extrinsic motivation of the game will be that the wining team will gain 1 extra credit
point for every 5 points earned by the team, per person, on the test. Each correct answer is worth
2 points. The motivation for everyone to keep playing is that each team has the opportunity to
steal the other teams points for the win. The students will also be receiving participation points
for the day if they remain on task.
The intrinsic motivation for the students to participate is that they will do better on the
test if they review the material they are given.

Directions:
1. The students will get in to two teams for the game, teams will be pick by random.

2. One at a time in alternating fashion students, one at a time, will proceed to the jenga
tower and remove a block. Then place the block on the top of the tower.
3. Each block has a number from 1-53, with a corresponding question, asked by the teacher.
4. The student has 10 seconds to answer the question, if the student does not answer the
question correct the other team has a chance to answer the question and steal the points.
5. If both teams get the answer wrong they switch points with each other. This is to make
the game that much more exciting, because if your team is losing and the other team got
the answer wrong all you do is answer wrong to get the points switched.
6. The game continues until the jenga tower falls, the team that makes it fall is the losing
team no matter their point score.
7. The only time a team can collaborate together for an answer is when they are working on
a steal.
Understanding of the directions will be checked by pulling out Popsicle sticks with the students
names on them and asking the following questions:
Who will answer the question from the block?
How many points is a correct answer worth?
How will your partners be chosen?
Can you use team collaboration to answer the question on the block?
Where do you place a block after it is removed from the tower?
How long do you have to answer the questions?
How many extra points do you receive on the test for winning the game?
Can you use your notes?
Can you ask for help during the game to answer questions?

Active Participation
All students will be involved in the activity because they will be called on to check for
understanding with Popsicle sticks.
On task behavior will be maximized because the timer will be used. Each student
receives 10 seconds to answer the question. Students will be engaged in the activity because the
winning team will receive automatic points for the test.
Transition times will be minimized because the students on the other team will only have
10 seconds to answer the question. I will also set the timer for 1 minute so that the students are
aware that their time is finished.

Expectation of Students Behavior

The students will be expected to have reviewed their study guides before coming to class.
They will have to be able to describe each question in length. The students should be on task
without yelling. The volume level should be about medium. The only discussion that should be
happening is what pertains to the question. If the students are off task, they will have team points
reduced with each warning as well as losing the extra credit points on the test. To get students
attention after each round, the auditory signal will be given. The signal will be 1-2-3 eyes on
me. The students are expected to meet classroom requirements after the signal is given. The
students will be placed in groups by random selection.

Modeling

I will show the students how to remove a block from the tower and place it on the top of
the tower without making it fall. After I show them how to play, a practice round will be played.
Once the students have demonstrated their understanding of the directions, the game will be
begin.
*Note: The inspiration for the game comes from the game Jenga. And Professor Sherman from
GCC.
