Grade/ Grade Band: 3A

Topic: How do plants change and grow.

Lesson # 4 in a series of __5___ lessons

Seeds have been an important development in the reproduction and spread of

flowering plants, Seeds, though too small, they have their own parts, like an ordinary living thing. A seed
only develops its parts only when it undergoes a process called seed germination. Germination is the
process by which plants, emerge from seed and begin growth.
Brief Lesson Description:

Performance Expectation(s):

The student can use the seed to plant because they have been doing that

experiment before.
at the end of the class my students will be able to Identify the parts of the seed and
define germination process.
Specific Learning Outcomes:

Narrative / Background Information

Prior Student Knowledge: The students know that in order to plant a tree we must put a seed in the soil and water it with the sunlight to
help it grow.

Science & Engineering Practices:

Disciplinary Core Ideas:

Questioning and analysis

Start to ask them question.

Definition of, germination.

Crosscutting Concepts:

Systems and system models

(what are the main parts of the
seed?)
Can the germination happen with
if one of the parts is missing?)

Possible Preconceptions/Misconceptions:

Some of the ESL students will have difficulties understanding the germination process.
I will be using some pictures to make it easier for them to understand.

LESSON PLAN 5-E Model

ENGAGE: Opening Activity Access Prior Learning / Stimulate Interest / Generate Questions:

Review by asking them some questions about the previous lesson like
What are the parts of the flower what is the function of the stem in the plant?
. I will start asking them about if they know how plants start growing.
I will show them a video that shows and explains the germination process.

EXPLORE: Lesson Description Materials Needed / Probing or Clarifying Questions:

I will give each group a knife, plates and magnifying glass, after that I will give them some seeds and they
will have to cut them and start looking at them. They will have to look at the parts of seed.

Materials:

Knifes, plates, magnifying glass, seeds

EXPLAIN: Concepts Explained and Vocabulary Defined:

After they are done we will discuss the parts that they found and we will classify them together.
Vocabulary: food, roots, seed coat, leaves

ELABORATE: Applications and Extensions: worksheet

I will give them a worksheet and they will have to label the different parts of seeds. They will be
describing the germination process.

I will be marking their worksheets and they will have to draw a seed in their science booklet and
color it and write 2 sentences about germination in seeds.
EVALUATE:

Formative Monitoring (Questioning / Discussion):

Summative Assessment (Quiz / Project / Report):
Elaborate Further / Reflect: Enrichment:

Reflection:
My lesson went good, at the end of my class I achieved my objective and now my student is able to
recognize the parts of the seeds. They are able to label them and know the job of each on of them. My
students enjoyed the exploring stage when they had to cut the seeds and look at them using the
magnifying class. There was a little bit of misbehaving will doing this activity but I told them that I will take
a star from their boards so they behaved well.
