Throughout this unit, we will practice reading and writing skills that help us identify
story elements and figurative language. Now, as a project-based assignment using
these reading and writing strategies, you will create a childrens, middle school, or
young adult book that highlights the concepts we have studied so far this year. From
incorporating elements to reflect the genre of a story to using figurative language to
emphasize details and entertain the targeted audience, you will produce a thoughtful
and creative childrens, middle school, or young adult book using PowerPoint, Google
Presentations, Google Docs, Word, or handwriting as your medium. You will turn in
your book along with a reflection explaining what you learned from this experience.
The requirements are as follows. This work must be original with the exception of fan
fiction, or conditional writing preapproved by me in advance. Direct plagiarism will
result in a zero on the assignment.

Create a Childrens, Middle School, or Young Adult

Book that includes at least seven literary elements. Refer
to Literary Elements Sheet for details.

Your book must include a cover page and page

numbers that organize your book. It should be in MLA
style where applicable, and must include a back cover
with a blurb that reviews your book.

coherent writing

Your book should be a minimum of 1,000 words

for a childrens book, 2,000 words for a middle school
book, and 3,000 words for a young adult book.

Must include a reflection that discusses your writing

process and experience becoming an active reader.

elements as well as likes and dislikes

Provide a conclusion that follows from and

reflects on what is experienced, observed, or
resolved over the course of the narrative.

Your book should be creative and include pictures

that are thoughtful and target your audience if its a
childrens book. This does not apply for a middle school
or young adult book.

You must satisfy the requirements of the rubric with

a minimum of 15 prior to submission. Must have at least
two peer reviews. Peer review sheets have been attached.
