Task
Programming for three fictional students
These three students have recently become a part of the class/group you are doing your Professional
Learning Experience placement in. You will need to take the planned programming you have already
made for teaching in your placement (or a previous one but the one you are doing now will be more
useful to you)and think about how you will include Rory, Kai and Riverin the class. You will need to
think about the abilities of the three students, what they can do (please add as many details to the
small sketch I have provided as it will help you in doing this assignment to have a good mental
picture). You may already have a student who is similar to one of these students in the class or have
worked with a student who reminds you of one of them. Please feel free to discuss these students
with other people and do as much research as you can to help you plan for them. You will want to use
at least Part Three of your text to help you get started. You will also want look at the other materials I
have provided within the unit and in e-reserve to help you too. In the materials you will find videos
from previous guests who are parents and or have worked with some students with similar
characteristics. I would also suggest looking at other resources you may find on line or available at
your school. Dont forget that past units of study will help you too. You will find it helpful to make a
preliminary IEP for each of the children as an outline to help you with the programming.
The three students (they are a similar age to the students you are already working with) are described
below: I have tried to pick names that can belong to either a girl or a boy. The more you develop
the students in your mind the easier it will be for you to program for them. You may like to give them a
specific label, but if you do so you will need to say who the expert was who diagnosed the student.
We as teachers do not officially diagnose, but medical and allied professionals do.
You will need to provide me with the general program you will be using and then show me the
adaptations you will be making to support these three students. Please include references as
needed, using APA style (see the library website for latest APA style guide). As this is an
assignment for your university coursethe programming template may not to be exactly the one you
would use if it were only for your school as you may need to give me more detail to show that you
know why you are making changes. This will help me to know what you understand better.
All three children have recently become a part of the class you are teaching in. If you are in a
childcare centre the same things will apply. Please do not be put off by the use of the words class
and student if these are words you are not using. You may call them children and the place a group
if that helps you to think more freely when doing the assignment.

Kai

with peers and teachers, however Kais speech is
unclear and is often difficult to understand. Kai is frequently absent from class due to hospitalizations
and illnesses related to Kais respiratory issues and a heart problem. Kai has corrected vision but
does not always come to school with glasses.
River
River recently relocated to your community when Rivers mother re-married. River was described by
a previous teacher as, an outsider, in relation to the peer group and appears to have high anxiety
around transitions and routines. River excels at mathematical tasks, but does not always appear to
understand what is going on in the classroom (e.g. following directions or reading context cues). River
gets very upset when unable to complete a task or when mistakes have been made. River will not
persevere when tasks are perceived to be too difficult.
Rory
Rorys family speaks another language at home and in the community. Rory is well above most of the
students in athletic abilities and is also a talented artist. However Rory has a very short attention
span, and prefers hands on learning activities. Once actively participating in an activity, Rory
demonstrates focused and productive engagement in the task. Rorys academic work is significantly
behind other students in the class.
You decide (mandatory): make one of the above students Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
