WHY FOCUS ON PARENTS?

Parental influence and modelling had a significant effect on

adolescent drinking behaviours (Ryan, Jorm & Lubman,
2010).
Parental factors that affect adolescent alcohol consumption
(Ryan, Jorm & Lubman, 2010):
o Parental involvement
o Family communication
o General discipline
Parents who engage and
monitor their children saw
lower levels of underage
drinking in their children
(Fulkerson, Pasch, Perry &
Komro, 2008).
A study examining over 2000
adolescents found that parents that were authoritative and
conducted positive interactions created a protective effect
against adolescent drinking (Piko & Balazs, 2012)
Adolescents that are already drinking can reduce this risky
behavior with parental intervention, proving that it is never
too late to intervene (Koning, Lugtig, & Vollebergh, 2014).
