Entrance exam at the SCB


EAR-TRAINING TEST: BACHELOR LEVEL
- singing and identifying intervals played on the harpsichord (closed and open position)
- active singing of intervals above or below a given pitch
- singing and identifying triads (3/5, 3/6, 4/6): major, minor, diminished and augmented
- singing triads upwards or downwards from a given pitch
Dictation: singing and writing down a fairly simple tonal melody
Improvization: singing a continuation / completion of the dictated melody
Sight-singing a melody of medium difficulty from the 17th or 18th century, notated in treble or bass
clef
Candidates for Master studies
will in addition be tested on the following:
- singing and identifying seventh chords in all inversions (7, 5/6, 3/4/6, 2/4/6)
- Dictation: singing and writing down a 2-voice setting (soprano and bass)
and identifying the harmonies (preferably figured bass, traditional
functional harmony also accepted.)

PREREQUISITE KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY


- General musical knowledge: basic notation, intervals, keys, rhythm, simple chords and cadences
- facility in sightreading in treble and bass clef
For Master studies: knowledge of figured bass and/or harmony is expected

KEYBOARD ABILITY
Candidates in all fields are expected to show at least elementary proficiency with a keyboard
instrument, preferably harpsichord. In the exam you are expected to
- play a short piece of your choice
- sightread a homophonic 4-voice chorale (or equivalent)
