Welcome to Painting II

Instructor: Tiffany Trotter

Course Description:
In this one-semester class we will be building upon your prior knowledge of materials, techniques
and art history from Painting I. In this course we will examine various art movements relevant to
painting and explore various techniques while creating our own unique pieces. This semester you
will communicate your growth of knowledge and experience and create personal works of art.
During this process you will meet the four standards of art making: observe, reflect, create and
transfer. Your will create original works of art that are personal, reflective and unique, build selfconfidence and patience while problem solving. This is a challenging and compelling course
designed to push students to develop critical thinking skills that they can apply to all areas and
disciplines. In addition to creating your own work you will critique the work of your peers and
develop a classroom culture of expression, safety and constructive criticism.
Course Outline:
This semester will consist of 5 projects and the class website:
From a photo
In this project you will be creating a work of art in which a photo you select is your
primary source material. We will be exploring the relationship between photography and
painting, the similarities and differences and attempting to answer the question: why do we paint?
Perspective
In this project you will be moving from photos to real life observation. We will be
exploring how objects exist in space, how light interacts in space, how we can capture objects
realistically and how our eye perceives objects in space.
People
In this project you will create a portrait of yourself or someone you chose. We will be
continuing our exploration of perspective and light as well as proportions and the human body.
Multimedia
In this project you will create a three-dimensional painting. Students will research and
explore multi-media art, sculpture and the interaction between disciplines.

All your own

For this project you will complete and submit a written proposal detailing what you will
be creating for your final project. This is your opportunity to utilize all the skills you have been
developing all semester and showcase yourself!
Class website
This semester we will create and maintain a class website where you will showcase your
artistic process and finished pieces. Each student will have your own blog page on the website
where you will post photos of your finished product as well as any supporting images you think
are relevant (such as sketches or in-process shots). You will also post an artist statement
describing your work with the images. You will be given a log in and password to the site and
will have designated class time to work as well as an in-class camera but you may also chose to
use your cell phone to photograph your work.
If you do not want to participate in the class website and would not like photos of yourself
or your work published please speak with me immediately so we can make other
arrangements.

Studio Behavior:
In the art studio there is one guiding statement:
feel free to do anything that does not cause harm to yourself or another person.

The studio is a safe space for creativity, self-expression and vulnerability. In order to ensure that
every person feels safe to create unique and personal work we will create a culture of acceptance
and inclusion.
Following safety rules and guidelines is extremely important as there are harmful tools and
chemicals being utilized therefore any student not following safety procedures will be
immediately removed from the classroom.
Grades:
Your overall grade will consist of studio habits (10%), projects (50%), critiques (10%),
sketchbook (10%), class website (10%) and assignments/quizzes (10%). You will be graded on
your personal growth, effort and achievement over the course of the semester.

Make-up work:
Students who notify me in advance or are excused will be allowed to make up work for full

to notify me of your absence so that we can create a plan for you to make up any work you
missed and earn studio points.
Cell Phone Use:
Students may use their cell phones during studio work time. You are allowed to use earphones to
listen to your personal music providing you can still hear me give instructions. You are allowed
to document your work for the class website and utilize your phone for research.

You may not waste class time on your cell phone (think snap chat, Instagram and Facebook). If
you are using your cell phone inappropriately you will temporarily lose the privilege of using it in
class and you will store it out of sight. Consistent inappropriate use of your cell phone will
negatively affect your studio grade and you will lose full privilege of phone use.
