Equipment Needed: Bowling alley, balls, bowling shoes or socks
Activity Description: This activity is for any age, and involves a trip to a bowling alley as part
of a community outing. This could be useful for individuals in an inpatient setting, who are
working on community reintegration, or as a teambuilding activity focused on increasing
communication and social skills amongst group members.
Leadership Considerations: Facilitator may want to assist in building teams, keeping the
numbers small, 3 or 4 participants; and monitor participants for possible needs of adaptation.
Adaptations: For individuals with physical disabilities such as paraplegia, multiple sclerosis, or
limited hand functions. This could involve the use of a ramp, if the individual is unable to throw
a ball, or a release switch to use the ramp, even if there is no ability to push the ball. For
individuals who are unable to go to a bowling alley, such as small children, or individuals in a
school setting can use plastic bowling pins and rubber balls set up in a smaller room or a gym
setting.
